If it sounds dirty enough to you that's all that matters. However, the SM57 is a vocal mic which is designed to deliver a clean sound. That said many harp players use this mic with great results. It is a VERY popular vocal mic so it should be very easy to borrow one and experiment with your amp. Don't forget to use an impedance matching transformer as the mic is lo-z and the amp requires a hi-z signal. All the best on your journey for the "perfect" harp tone! There are many of us on the same trip to keep you company!

@ roadharp, I have one of Greg Heumans ultimate 57's.
The sound is far from clean. I have one with the older element, it's labled as a Shure Brothers Unidine. The new mic's just say Shure on them and they are cleaner.Just thought I would point this out since I have one and play thru it on a regular basis. It's no bullet mic by any strechbut it's closer to a"Paul Butterfield" sound. I play thru an HG2 5 watt amp.

The SM57 is one of the most versatile mics - it dirties up nicely - ALMOST as much as a GOOD bullet and way better than a cheap modern one. It has a warm clean tone. But it is uncomfortable to hand hold for long. As Shredder suggested, check out the Ultimate Series Mics which make the mic shorter, lighter, and add a built-in volume control. The result is economical and very popular among harp players.
