Okay...this is by far and away my favorite Musselwhite tune. I've recently been watching Willy Mazzer and The Headhunters' rendition of it. If you haven't seen it, go youtube it. It's exquisite. But as I'm not trained heavily in the world of theory, I'm having a lot of trouble figuring out how to play the sonofagun. I've been trying to work it out on a C harp. Does anyone else play it in a different key?

Here's a cool live version. Gotta love Charlie's down-to-earth demeanor. It was his frequent usage of positions beyond 1st and 2nd that first caught my attention.
Here's that live version by the Headhunters. Gotta love that Hammond. ---------- I entertain By bringing a tone to your brain Just like a west bound train You wanna know my name? Well, it's Hawkeye Kane

Hey, Todd - thanks for posting that live version - hadn't seen that. Man, Charlie has a cool mic and volume control.......
I like the Headhunters version too. Not played as smooth as Charlie but I like the way the arrangement builds, and I like the idea of doing it acoustic and then moving to a mic/amp like that... ---------- /Greg
Greg - if you ever get the opportunity to hear Kid, Mike and June do this tune, it's great. The Kid really tears it up w/o the harp. ---------- The Blues Photo Gallery
Your right enough Diggs my friend. It's an A moothie in 3rd position..B minor.
I used a standard tuned harp and one with the 3 blow tuned to F sharp at one point. I wasn't happy with my intonation and went that way to make sure it sounded as sweet as possible. I have another version with just harp and piano all played on one instrument. For some reason i could play it better back then. ---------- http://www.reverbnation.com/#!/alprice
Greg, I agree with you on the lack of smoothness compared to Charlie. I just think the staccato notes give it a slightly jazzy feel to it. I love Willy's siren-like bending at 4:44. The notes that the guy on the Hammond is playing mix with Willy's and make that slightly extra-terrestrial sound. ---------- I entertain By bringing a tone to your brain Just like a west bound train You wanna know my name? David Barrett sells a chart for this tune which has sheet music and tab. No chord symbols or correct key signature, though.
The notation on the sheet music in the Barrett chart seems inaccurate since 5 blow on a Bb harp (third position, key of C minor)is written on the sheet music as E natural when that note is actually D natural, 5 draw is notated as F when it is actually E flat, 4 blow is annotated as C instead of B flat, 3 draw whole step bend is annotated as A instead of B, etc. So the sheet music does not match the tab.
The sheet music is apparently in C major but the tab is for C minor on a Bb harp and the tune is clearly in a minor key. A minor has the same key signature as C major, but the melody is not correctly written in A minor. Not sure whether the tab is right, but the sheet music and the tab don't correspond
I wish the sheet music was accurate because I could use it to transpose the tune into fourth or fifth position if it was right. Barrett probably thinks that since most harp players can't read music he doesn't need to bother with key signatures and stuff like that. Personally, i don't sight read, but I can make sense of a chart well enough to know this one is wrong. I got it as free gift when I ordered something else, so I guess you get what you pay for.

I think Barrett's system (which is explained in his books) is to transpose everything as if it was played on a C harp. In this case, I assume he's written the tune out in D minor (third on a C harp). That's why everything is out by a whole tone relative to the C minor version. And I guess he thinks key signatures are too complicated for us.
None of which excuses leaving out the chords. Learning the melody is terrific but it's not that much good if you can't tell a guitar player how to accompany it.
