I think you're on the right track. You'll be better off in the long run learning "by ear." You might want to modify what you see and hear on a video to suit your tastes or to comport with your abilities. You are correct that people often request tabs relative to You Tube videos. I doubt that many get them. The player doesn't have them on hand. He/she would have to sit down for a substantial period of time and go through the drudgery of tabbing out what he/she played. Now, Adam or Ronnie Shellist or Dan Gage and others may post a You Tube lesson and break down a lick or licks for the viewers, and that works for everybody. Otherwise, you can purchase lessons with tabs on this site for a nominal fee, and that's fair for everyone.

there is a place for tabs.
1) for beginners 2) to put you in the correct position for the song 3) to give you some new ideas 4) to see how people do it different than you
=============== 1 for beginners It's the fastest way to get someone started. It gets them actually playing and having fun
============== 2 position I was having a hard time learning a Civil War tune called "Lorena". After looking up a tab, I discovered 12th position.
============== 3 new ideas You will play the tab and say, "That's not the note I usually play, but it sure sounds good". We all have our favorite riffs. We sometimes make them fit were they do not belong. A tab can help you break bad habits.
============== how people do it different Similar to #3, but it's different :) A song you do in 3rd position, another may do in 5th. Someone else may do it an octave up or down. It is still a quick way to get a new idea.
FREE TAB WARNING Professional tabs are usually good. But I have found over half of the tabs at harptabs.com, to have something I disagreed with and went on to write my own version
