There are a lot of miscellaneous recordings with Little Walter as a sideman. Stuff with Memphis Minnie, John Brim, even Shel Silverstein!

I don't really know where to find them on a convenient compilation CD, but the biography "Blues with a Feeling" has a COMPLETE chronological discography of ever session Walter did.
You obviously love Little Walter, so you should get the book if you don't have it already. It is excellent.

On Disc 1 Blues with a Feeling song #7 titled That's It. I have been listening to this cut over and over recently and the chromatic always sounded a little strange. At first I thought he might have switched to E flat [third position with button in] but that didn't seem right. I then realized that what he is probably doing is playing in first position key of C on a C chromatic with the button in for all the draw notes which gives you the tonic C [slide in on the B note] slide in for E flat [ flatted 3rd] slide in for G flat [flat 5] and slide in for flat 7 [B flat]. What sounds a little strange is playing partial chords with the flatted 5th in it. I don't think he releases the button to get the four and i'm not sure that he hits the blow note for G the fifth. I just had a discussion about this last week with my harp genius friend, Pierre Beaureguarde. This cut might be an early attempt by Walter on chromatic. By the way I am mentioned and interviewed for this biography because I saw Walter in the mid 50's in his prime and I saw him at his worst in the 60's.My name is Paul Shapiro.

hey Piro39! or Paul..i've seen your name around over the years...

you beat me to the punch re- 'That's it'. i always love that tune till the CHRO comes in, ruins the tune for a while, and then walter comes back with a simple diatonic figure that's kind of brilliant actually.

i doubt Bb chromatics were widely available, if available at all, when walter recorded this tune.
never-the-less barrett is correct that a Bb chro belongs on the chro break.

a friend/collector turned me on to this tune. he said, "wanna hear LW mess up royally?" of course i said "yeah". i dig the tune in spite of the huge glaring flaw.

he also gave me LWs unfortunate attempt at 'watermelon man'. i can't listen to it. oh well.

over all, Walters brilliantly insipiring output more than makes up for this minute percentage of oddities.

he was losing it by the time he recorded watermelon man.
and, as you pointed out, "This cut [That's it] might be an early attempt by Walter on chromatic".

Silly question for Little Walter fanatics/historians.

according to the above discography:

My Babe and Juke (two of my favorite tunes by LW), are played in different keys on the Super Blues record from every other place they appear in his dicography. My Babe: in G on Super Blues, in F on The Essential and His Best....Juke: in G on Super Blues, in E on The Essential, His Best and Blues With a Feeling.

Why is this?...I mean, I guess it could be because he's Little Walter, and he felt like it.

Just wondering if there is a reason.

MP, I am wondering if Barrett is just making an assumption that it is a B flat chromatic because it is in 3rd position. I would be very surprised if Walter even owned one. Check out the chromatic part with the instructions from my post. Slide in all draw notes, see what you think.

Yes that is interesting. I thought Stevie Wonder was the first person to play 1st position ("C" on a "C" chrom) with the slide in as home position.
I never payed much attention to the chrom part of that song because aa well umm. OK IT SUCKS!
He obviously was just learning the cro at that time. It's also interesting that he never developed that style, but instead any time he recorded with the slide in after that it was always playing Eb on a "C" chrom. I wonder who told him about playing 1st position with the slide in. This also makes me think that Stevie Wonder must have learned that from someone else also.
Many people believe that is the Stevie Wonder way of playing!
hmmmmm... interesting indeed!

A couple of essential CDs that feature Little Walter as a sideman are: "Muddy Waters-The Definitive Collection" with Little Walter playing behind Muddy on 11 songs and "Jimmy Rogers-His Best" which has Little Walter playing on 12 cuts.

Hi Guys
Walter 'odds and ends' response:
Regarding 'That's It', some years ago I paid a recording engineer friend to remove the chromatic section (and yes, it is a 64 chromatic in C - Walter just 'lost the plot' there for a while) and then splice it seamlessly and put it on CD...As you'll appreciate, it sounds great - I never listen to the original!

I have the Le Roi du Blues albums and the dialogue that is mentioned by groyster1 is on CD these days. I agree that it's a pleasure to hear (unless Walter is feeling and sounding angry, then it's pitiful).

Blocker's list is excellent but 'I Love You So' is played on Koch harmonica which (as you no doubt all know) is a diatonic with a slide/button, therefore it's in C and Db.

Lastly, I definitely would not recommend the 'Super Blues' album.

Best wishes from a (British) Little Walter fan since 1965 - and I still listen to Walter most days.

i'd suggest
hate to see you go
the two disc essential lw
confessin the blues
and the complete jimmy rogers

this will keep you well fed and won't repeat too many cuts. also, it avoids some of the more regrettable recordings...like watermelon man. you will miss 'that's it'. personally i kind of dig it even though i skip the chro section every time.

in my new band we play- nobody but you, as long as i have you, aw baby, off the wall, shake dancer, juke, and i got to go.
in the past i've played dead presidents, fast large one, just your fool, can't hold on much longer, and tell me mama. i love walter tunes!

With respect, sydeman, your discogaphy details are not from the most reliable source I've seen. 1995? There's been much research since then.

It is without doubt Junior Wells playing harp on 'Who's Gonna Be Your Sweet Man', 'Gone To Main Street', 'Standing Around Crying' and 'Iodine In My Coffee'; of course it is Little Walter playing on 'Just To Be With You' - as Rod Piazza says: "Who else?"

And although I haven't triple-checked, I can't see any mention of 'Mad Love (I Want You To Love Me)' which is another Little Walter classic that Big Walter gets the credit for all too often.

Regards
