As most of you know, I live in Oxford and teach at Ole Miss. Just recently, while searching for something else, I came across a reminder of an extraordinary research project started by Walter Liniger, one of the early archivists at the Blues Archive (which resides in the Ole Miss library on campus) and pursued by several others. Basically, between 1985 and 1991, Walter and others tried to accumulate as much information of every sort as they could on EVERY blues harmonica player, living and dead. I've decided to cut and paste the description that I found on line of the collection's contents. (They've got a bunch of stuff from me, including original letters about the origin of Satan and Adam, but that's the least of what's here, as you'll see.) Please spread the word to your friends and colleagues that if you're ever in the vicinity of Oxford, Mississippi and you want to dig DEEPLY into the history of blues harmonica--or if you're ever planning on writing a history of the instrument, or a survey of the players of the last 50 years, etc.--you really need to see this collection. Here goes. It's a long list!
PS: The name of the current archivist is Greg Johnson (gj1@olemiss.edu). He's the guy to contact if you want to visit the Blues Archive and go through the collection.
PPS: One question I'd love people on this board to answer: Which of these materials most interests you? Which is likely to have the most interesting information? My own answer surely includes the personal letters and cassettes from Bob Shatkin, since I knew him: he was a brilliant guy and incredibly learned about the history of the blues harmonica. I may just visit the Archive myself--it's five minutes from my campus office--and check that stuff out and let you know what I find.

The collection consists of correspondence between the Archive and various "blues harpists," several instruments, information sheets on musicians, cassette tapes of harmonica players, and incense (?). Part of the project consisted of surveying contemporary harmonica players about their playing styles, influences, instruments, etc. The majority of the correspondence in this collection is between Walter Liniger and the various participants in the Harmonica Project. Wow! What an amazing archive.
I can't say what interests in it the most as I am just overwhelmed by the material that's in it.

Box 5...Bb marine Band thought to belong to Sonnyboy. I'd like to see that harp...see if Sonnyboy did any tweaks to his harps. Even to hold it would be nice!!
Box 4 is a bit of a mystery...

i am curious to what the surveys are. "Folder 63: Bob Shatkin: Harmonica survey; Information sheets for "The 'Devil's Toy' Project" (4 pages); Form letter [undated], re: "4th Position"; Correspondence:"
box 4- incense?? this seems like a mistake, doesn't it? so will this box float around with this collection forever always getting the same reaction from those first opening the box. somebody needs to either light them up or start putting other miscellanies stuff into the boxes. i got a huge set of keys that are useless to me to donate to the cause.

Flying quickly over this very long post, I got two remarks :
1. Alan Wilson has been forgotten once more ;
2. Aleck/Rice "Sonny Boy" Williamson ? Shoudn't it be Alec/Rice "Sonny Boy Williamson" Miller ? (but I reckon that's a detail).

Holy carp! Someone call the History Detectives, STAT!
"BOX 4 (Incense): This box, rather strangely, contains incense. There is no indication what this has to do with the Harmonica Project. The box contains 4 items:

I WANT to know what the incense has to do with harmonica... Seriously... It must have a VERY interesting story to it...
I'd also like to see this gem "Hohner "The Harmonica Artists Calendar" 1987;" from folder 68....
I'm also interested in the story of this letter "Letter "Ode to the 'Unknown Harp Blower'" October 1989" from folder 16.
Finally, I want to know about the harmonica hospital: "Folder 31: Harmonica Hospital / Harmonica Horizons / James McKenzie: Harmonica survey; "Harmonica Hospital Newsletter" 1/1, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 (1989); Fiction titled "My Trip to the Harmonica Hospital" by McKenzie (1989);". What is it? When did it exist, and what went on there?
