Hi to everyone, this is my first post in a forum ever! I'd like to know if someone has played harp through the pignose hog 30? There are videos on youtube which show the pignose hog 20, but since i need a piano amp i thought i'm gonna get the hog 30 and can use it for both piano and harp. Is this gonna work. Maybe i should mention that i'm a student with little money and not a professional musician. The hog would serve me for practise, outdoor jams and small gigs once in a while. Thanks for any help and recommendations. Lars

Well, I'm certainly not an expert on amplifiers, but from reading the voluminous posts on amps in this forum and others, the consensus would be that the Pignose is "okay" for harp but not optimal. Remember that your mic is also going to play a critical role in your sound. My advice to you would be to use the Forum Search function here and peruse the many posts. Secondly, since you're on a budget, I would suggest getting a used amp, perhaps off eBay. Sometimes you can stumble on a bargain in a thrift shop like Goodwill or Salvation Army...if you're not in a hurry. If you are near southeastern Michigan, I could donate to you a Line 6 15-watt solid-state amp, which would be good for piano and could be made more harp friendly with an effects pedal...probably.

I have a Pignose 30 and it is okay for harp, but not great. I also have a Sonotone "Voice of Music" mic that I use with it that sounds pretty good in combination. I wouldn't spend a whole bunch on the Pignose, and the suggestion about trying to find a used one is good.

Pignose seems to have a loyal following. Talk to Steve Harvell - The King of Pignose!
(This vid is a Hog 20 but I think he has a video or two somewhere with a Hog 30)

A gentleman brought a Hog 30 to my jam a couple years ago. I thought it had poor tone.

Steve dumped his Hog 30, I believe, and uses multiple 5-watt Piggies, I think three at once. I have tried two, but in the end, they sound "okay" but are really one-dimensional. I still have one little Pignose. They are good for practice and sound pretty much the same no matter what mic I use.

Thank you guys for all he helpful responses! I guess i'm gonna crawl ebay for some other amps than the hog 30. And special thx to FMwoodeye for your offer, but unfortunately i'm from germany^^ think i will get an amp just for harp for now and a separate piano amp later. Or has someone THE perfect thing in mind for me? Probably not, since i can only spend 200-300 euros on an amp. About the mic: i have a superlux d112 but am planning to get me a bottle of blues mic. Which harp amp in the mentioned price range would be my best choice? Thanks to you all in advance!

I wouldn't buy a Bottle of Blues mic, as the Superlux you already have is a far better mic. I'd wait and save up for a good mic. As for amps I'd say go for something like a Roland Street if you want a battery powered amp.

VOX MINI3!!!
Awesome tone, and I am 90% shure that you can replace the 5" speaker for a 6" (a ceramic jensen?) and that would give you even better sound (and a litle more volume).
And the best part is: is cheap!

This is from US Blues. They market it as a harmonica amp and it comes in different colors. This one is 4 watts, but I see that they make a 10 watt as well. However, I can't find the 10 watt for sale, only pics.

I was using the pignose (whatever the shoebox size one is that runs from 6 AA batteries). 92-100? Dunno. Anyway, I agree with FMW that the sound can be one-dimensional. The best I found with it was to plug in a LW Delay, and keep the volume relatively low. Really, that amp just gets more distorted as you turn it up. With the level just at the point where it stops being clean, so I can push it to distort with breath force, or play clean with lower breath force, and with the delay to add a little depth, I think it's not too bad. The 5.5" speaker limits it somewhat, but its ok I think. I've heard Kingley use one in similiar fashion and sound pretty good. I think everytime I've heard Steve Harvell demo one, he goes for rather more fuzz than I like. It sounds cool, but I soon grow bored with it. I think those Roland cubes are pretty cool, the Street would be nice but its a bit pricey. The standard micro cube is ok though and versatile. I'm about to start using a lectrosonics Mouse for which I have high hopes. Loud, 8" speaker and rechargeable...if my charger ever shows up \;^)

Alright thanks for all the new infos you guys! I abandoned the hog 30 now and am considering to get a vox amp. When i checked on the vox mini3 i discovered the mini5. Has anyone any experience with the vox mini 5 in combination with the superlux d112? Or at least info on the amp itself? Couldn't find any search results in google regarding harp sound with the vox mini5. Thanks again, and i also dropped the plan to purchase the bottle of blues mic.

I just read that the vox mini5 will be released in may 2013 and is practically the slightly bigger brother of the mini3/ the successor of the da5. I'll keep on saving money til may and then decide on either one of the three vox models. Thanks again, you guys can consider this thread as closed :)

Lars47,
The only diference whit the mini3 is the drumm patterns. The sound is the same. If you want to wait for that is OK, but the Mni3 is a good bet to, and remember, if you put a nice speaker in the Mini3 it will be louder and whit better tone that the Mini5.

Lars, I think you have a good lead on the voxes. If you haven't yet you might want to check out the http://jack-black.de/ German language forum including tons of infos on what's more readily available in Germany. With the money you're ready to spend you should be WELL on the good side for the market here (being Germany)

Alright, i don't want to wait til may anyways so i'll go with the mini3 i guess :p which speaker would be best to get? And one more question --> would a lone wolf harp delay further improve the sound? I'm asking because the mini 3 has built-in fx like delay, reverb etc. already.
Thx you all!

Lars47,
First you need to messure the space in the amp in order to know if a 6" would fit (my bet is "yes"). The weber seems to be good speaker, and the jensen alnico are good to.
Try the delay in the amp first, is very good.
