Hi everybody,
I'm new here and wanted to start off by showing you the mic I'm busy building.
I will post the pics later this morning (South African time).
Hope you'll enjoy it.

Ok...
This is where I started. I used a green foam sponge. The kind you use to stick the stems of flowers into. When it's dry it's amazingly easy to shape with practically anything.
Then I covered the foam/sponge in cling film. Using a twin-pack epoxy called Steenvas (pronounced Steen-fuss) I made a pancake like shape and lay it over the cling filmed foam. Below
Then I waited a few hours for it to dry, before removing the foam. Then I marked out the area for the jack and volume pot. I put the holes in it so the excess epoxy would seep through, making it bond like a rivet.
I then mixed up more epoxy to build the jack and pot housing. I used a cereal box to keep form. They tear off pretty easily.
Then it came down to the element. A friend kindly had and old telephone with a nice element in it.
I then decided to customize the "grill" of the phone.

Jared - Your pictures aren't showing up. I suspect you may have got some html a little wrong. See the forum how-to for information on loading pictures, sound files, etc.
I've put a link to the images for you so people can follow it and see them. Jared's Mic

I'll try edit.

I used a stress ball (not sure if it's an international term) to house the mic element.
This is what I have so far. I will update when I have more shots.
Any advice or tips is greatly appreciated.

Jared

Cool. I have often thought of doing something similar, with fibreglass. I 'd like to do one from timber too, but the challenge is always how to do a decent grill. I like your solution. Look forward to seeing your finished mic. ---------- Lucky Lester

Thanks didjcripey!
Yeah this is the initial stages. I will be using a gel-coat fiberglass once the surface has been sanded even.
I've been given an old dynamic mic to tear apart. So if this element sounds rubbish, I'll swop them.
I would ideally like to get a custom grill mad with a nice curve to the face. All in due time.

Jared

You are quite the handy guy. Fascinating stuff. More of a challenge than the "Bottle 'O Blues" approach, which fits my technical skills more closely. I await the sound. Keep us abreast of your progress.

Thanks for the kind words guys.
Making a stubby dynamic too. It's going to be interesting.
Will take pics of that too.

Hi Frank,
Oh yes I have. I have had my eye on this one Step aside botmaker I use to work with CNC machines, so I'm pretty keen to design a mic grill and shell then get it machined.

So I put together a little project (and by little, I mean a couple of hours of work). Super simple cut and glue job on an old Dynamic mic. It still needs to be cleaned up and painted.

FM, hmm, maybe someone should make a coconut shell mic. Or bamboo. :)

Can someone please assist me in identifying the mic element pictured below
The text reads TX STC 4S 81/35
Just need to know what type of element it is.
Thanks
EDIT: I found Sontronics STC mic ranges, but nothing in my numbers.
