Here's a nice clip from a player who hasn't been talked about much here. His sound certainly has something of his father's sound:

He sat in with Shine, Alan, and me when we busked the Juke Joint Fest streets in Clarksdale last spring. He was incredibly dynamic, singing and blowing. Not subtle, but he transfixed the crowd and stole the show. Not a guy to underesimate!

And he's from Carbondale? That's nuts! That's my mom's hometown and both my parents' alma mater. I'll have to track him down next time I'm down there.

Very nice indeed. I could listen to him play that stuff all night long. If I'm not mistaken it looks like he's using a couple of Kalamazoo amps in that clip.

Good clip. Thanks for posting it. I have CDs by his dad and always enjoyed them. Richard's style reminds me of Snooky.

Rip Lee Pryor is a fine harp player. His current CD features him on all of the instruments. He plays some of his Dad's tunes and some originals. I'm looking forward to his next CD. The first time that I saw him was at Antone's around 1995 with Snooky. He came out and did some tunes. His sound was as heavy as his Dad's. There is some cool video of him on youtube.

Stan - Sounds like an F harp in 2nd. A Bb in 3rd would work, but that's not what's in the clip :) I'm always impressed that someone can keep a steady thing going on guitar and then play harp.

Most of what Snooky and Rip Lee's playing is in second position. Some first position. You will know that when you hear it, because it'll be high octave Jimmy Reed style.

Snooky and Richard started many songs on the one with the band coming in by the four using the first four bars to set the tempo and the groove. If you want it to sound "right", its far easier to play in second position and you get to use chords and double stops which he used while performing. Snooky was a great performer and an important talent in blues history.

Anyone know how to get his current CD? I'd like to buy it and can't find it.
