Sad breaking news from Chicago:

Nick Charles, the longtime bass player for Billy Branch and the Sons of Blues, has passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer.

From Billy Branch's website:

"Nick Charles was given his first bass guitar and bass amp by Howlin Wolf! In addition, the young Nick was brought to Chicago by Howlin’ Wolf and Eddie Shaw. Early on Nick made his mark as the undeniable bass player extraordinaire. He’s played with Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King, Tina Turner, Eddie Shaw, Valerie Wellington and the Rolling Stones, just to name a few. In fact, you can see Nick on the DVD entitled, Muddy Waters & the Rolling Stones Live”

Further information will be provided regarding funeral services and memorials as it becomes available.

Last night was an amazing evening of fellowship, brotherhood, emotion, love, and performance of blues music as only the blues musicians of Chicago can deliver, as they paid tribute to the late Nick Charles, long time bass player for Billy Branch and The Sons Of Blues. The evening was a combination wake/viewing and all-star blues jam performed next to the casket where Nick laid. Family and friends filled the large room at Gatling's Funeral Home in Chicago and witnessed the outpouring of love and music.

For 5 hours, this Chicago contingent of musicians paid tribute to Nick with some amazing music. A partial list of musicians:

Billy Branch - harmonica and vocals
Moses Rutues, Jr. - drums
Sumito Ariyoshi - keyboards
Dan Carelli - guitar
Eddy Clearwater - vocals
Ronnie Baker Brooks - guitar and vocals
Eddie Shaw - saxophone and vocals
Jimmy Johnson - piano and vocals
Carl Weathersby - guitar and vocals
J.W. Williams - bass and vocals
Minoru Mayurama - guitar
Big James (Chicago Playboys) - trombone and vocals
Sharon Lewis - vocals
Nellie "Tiger" Travis - vocals
Mike Wheeler - guitar and vocals
Linsey Alexander - guitar and vocals
Big Time Sarah - vocals
Kenny Kinsey - bass
Rodney Brown - soprano sax and vocals
Claudette Miller - vocals
Johnny Drummer - vocals
Southside Stevie - harmonica
Roy Hytower (The Rootdoctor) - guitar and vocals
Vino Louden - guitar and vocals
Reginald Cooper - harmonica and vocals
Zora Young - vocals
Little Joe - harmonica
Gloria Thompson-Rogers - vocals
Willie Hayes - drums
Rodney Selmans - bass and vocals
Snapper - bass

And Eddie C. Campbell (for the first time on stage since his stroke last year) on harmonica and vocals, sang a soulful version of "Blues With A Feeling". His wife, Barbara Campbell, also sang a beautiful rendition of "Midnight Hour"

RIP Nick.

Nick was a great guy! A fabulous musician and a total class act. He was also one of the nicest guys that a person would ever meet. He's going to be missed.
