Hot on the heels of my Irish Session Harp comes another great harmonica for playing Irish and other folk music in a sweet-sounding, truly authentic manner: the Slide Diatonic.

Like the Irish Session Harp, my unique Slide Diatonic has the outward form of a chromatic harmonica – but it’s not! Instead of raising the notes a semitone, the slider raises the notes to the next note of the home scale. It comes in two keys, G and D, and the home scale is diatonic in 3 octaves – hence the name Slide Diatonic.

Since you only play in the natural built-in modes of the harp, the Slide Diatonic is super-easy to learn. If you can play a do-re-mi scale on any other harmonica, you can instantly play the Slide Diatonic. Then just dab on the slider to get tasty, in-key trills and decorations on all the notes! You’ll quickly be playing authentic-sounding cuts, rolls and other decorations in G, D, Am, Em, Bm – in fact, ALL the main keys and modes found in 90% of Irish music.

A moving picture is worth a million words, so please check out the demo video:

You can hear that my new Slide Diatonic is truly a sweet-sounding harp, and it’s a lot of fun to play! Ordering is at www.brendan-power.com, under the Harmonicas tab.

Brendan, isn't that similar to the special harp (I think it was a CX-12) that you built for Mike Will back then? He did some great stuff with that harp!

I often wonder what ever happened to Mike. His diatonic web site used to be the bible back in the day, along with "G's" Chromatic reference site. And of course your own!

Hi Michelle, I know what you mean, Mike was a lot more pro-active on the harmonica lists in the past. However his excellent harmonica information website The Diatonic Hamonica Reference is still up and good as ever:

http://www.angelfire.com/tx/myquill/

I recommend anyone to have a browse. He welcomes folks to get in touch also.

On the harmonica I made for Mike: to be honest I can't remember what it was. I did make a lot of custom CX-based chroms 10 years ago or more: CX-10, CX-14, CX-16.

Actually I'm returning to the CX-12 now for my own Chrom playing, using just a couple of outer housings and carrying a bunch of internal units in various tunings. I've also recently created a very far out version with Patent Pending attachment that I'll be announcing at the end of the month.
