Anyone here wearing dentures or maybe a partial? I am going to have some major dental work in my future and was wondering how this is going to affect my playing.

Obviously I won't be playing while heeling up but, that will give me some time to catch up on some needed repairs and watching some lesson video.

Just curious if anyone has an stories to tell about how this might have effected them.

Dentures aren't much of a problem for playing to me--I just have to keep them glued in good. . .

make sure that the dentist takes impressions of your teeth as they are now when you are playing good and have him make the dentures as close to your natural teeth as he can. forget about cosmetic look. changes in the shape of your teeth might screw up your embouchure, but its probably true that any change is probably workable after a while. im sure big walter and sonnyboy didnt have perfect teeth, i dont have dentures but a dentist did do enamel bonding on my bottom front teeth and changed the shape of those teeth and that really screwed up my playing for a while . i had to find an old picture where you could see my original teeth and go to another dentist and have him change the bottom teeth so they were more like my original teeth and i could play better again, on the good side sometimes a change can also be for the better. the more teeth in your mouth the more air pressure you can put in the harp, good luck

I wear upper dentures & have done so for over 50 years. Lost my upper teeth as a result of a cycling accident.

Personally, I believe that dentures are somewhat restrictive as they decrease the mouth cavity. What this does for me is makes it difficult to get the 3Dbb which I can achieve without the dentures. It's not really an option though to be seen without them in.

From observation many of the great players seem to have large mouths. I would think this would benefit playing ie more volume, more tone?

I sometimes use a denture adhesive particularly when I am surfing. I have played harp with the adhesive on the denture but have not noticed any difference.

Oh, and I hate dentures so make sure you look after your teeth.

At the end of the day I can tell you empirically that whatever new mouth you end up with will -after some adapting- become the mouth you play with. What choice will you have? When undergoing as complicated dental work as I have experienced I had to go through two stages: the transitional (a temporary fixture while my implants were healing) which felt very foreign and the completed dental work which was created with much more integrity and eventually (after a couple self-consciously clumsy nights on stage) felt natural to my playing. True-story: I was in the east village of Manhattan soloing during a jam song when my fixed bridge cracked nearly in half: yet I kept on soloing! In the telling this now sounds like b.s. even to me but indeed it was true. I think I shame so easily that I didn't want to show my shock (and I was shocked) while playing so kept it up with brevity....
Having dentures force you to adapt and then marry that new adaptation to your embouchure "sucks" but what are you going to do: We look down at our feet and that's where we are!
