I deleted all I could find. I think we need a better anti-spam solution. I just spent over an hour deleting that crap.

And if you send him an email, make sure you do it from a throw away email.

I really appreciate your service to the forum, Nacoran. It hasn't been a problem, but now it seems to be a problem. Let me see what I can do.

You can't stop spam. Once your address/forum is on one of these lists, it will only get worse. And btw. I wouldn't send any mail to a spammer... just saying...

The only way to limit the spam, as far as I see, is to change the registration system to single-approve.

EDIT: woops, missed the last posts (and the spam..). thanks for your work nacoran ;) alone up against the spam-zombies..

Thanks GH! No problem Adam. You know, it's not even the spammers that bother me. They make money by spamming, so I at least understand the motivation underneath it. It's the people who buy stuff from spam links that create the market. If they'd just do a Google search for their junk the spam market would dry up overnight.

Ok, the spammers bother me a little too. :)

I don't think that's how it works nacoran. They spam sites like this not looking for us to click on the links and buy their shit, but because having thier link all over the place moves then up the google list. I could be wrong but I think that's how it works.

why not just make it so you have to get accepted again like it was when i signed up.. just have the requests sent to a email that all the admins can log into.. or something like that...

@GermanHarpist

/You can't stop spam/

There are ways to stop bots.

1. Require a CAPTCHA to be entered for every post and/or for forum registration.

2. Require a "bot-proof" question for every post and/or for forum registration.

3. Limit the number of posts per user per day / hour / minute.

4. Limit the number of threads a user can post in per day / hour / minute.

5. Automatically unregister any user who posts more than X posts in a day / hour / minute.

@kudzurunner:

/Please send all email to that address/

This, I fear, will result in your email address(es) being sold to junk lists at greater value (greater value because they're obviously active accounts) and will only result in spreading the spam.

I humbly suggest you don't succumb to the temptation.

Even with nacoran's caveat

/if you send him an email, make sure you do it from a throw away email/

the chances are (s)he'll have moved on to a new temporary account by now.

@nacoran

/I think we need a better anti-spam solution/

A thought: can the forum be migrated to a more robust, secure and fully featured platform?

phpBB or somesuch?

all you have to do is go back to ADMIN APPROVAL for membership. Maybe set up a new admin account with a general email box. Do not approve the BS names. DONE.
