Hi there MBH’ers,

I need some advice on speaker selection for an amp that I’m building. Long story short, instead of spending my money on a Chinese made 5watter I chose to support a local amp tech and he is making me a 5watt chassis (basically a 5F2A clone). I’ll be tackling the cabinet as a DIY project and I’m sourcing my own speaker.

So I’m looking for an 8” speaker and the only speaker that I can get for a reasonable price are the Jensens. The shipping of a speaker totally kills the deal (it costs $100 to ship a $35 speaker to tip of Africa).

So the two Jensens that I’m looking at are the C8R and the cheaper Mod 8. I’ve read a lot about these to speaker, but mostly in a guitar context. The C8R has gotten good reviews for harmonica, but a lot of people rate the cheaper Mod 8 very highly (for guitar), saying that it’s got great tone, but it’s less efficient than the C8R so it’s softer (but that means you can crank the amp a bit more).

Does anyone have any experience with these two speakers? I’m looking for the speaker from these two that’ll sound the best for amplified harp. (The amp will mostly be a bedroom amp, but may be taken to the odd jam every now and then).

Any advice would be much appreciated.

R.

I have an 8" Jensen ceramic that sounds good with harp. Just make sure you use the right ohm speaker with your amp for best results.

Jim Rossen recommends the Weber Sig 8 @ 4ohms ($35) for this type of amp. Is that going to be much more expensive than the Jensens? The Weber is also the factory replacement for the '57 Champ, maybe suss out a Fender dealer for the price of a replacement speaker (though if anything like Fender's service in the UK, expect to wait a year for parts!).

Alternatively, see what 8" 4 ohm speakers are available domestically, if significantly cheaper than the Jensens or the Weber you an afford to kiss a few frogs & take a punt.

Ask your tech whether you can experment with trying the amp without the 500pf cap that links the vol pot to the tone pot (bypasses highs round the volume, especially at low vol, not always necesary, the 0.0047 to ground from the tone pot is still an effective hi cut & works well on its own) & with/without the cathode bypass caps at V1, pin 3, V2 pin 8. Try each change one at a time, you might like one, all, or none.

Thanks Nasty and Mr 5F6H, I have heard lots of great things about the Webers, but I contacted Weber for a quote on shipping, and it'll cost $100 to ship a $35 Alnico Sig 8. Like I said, the shipping kills it for me, I can't justify the shipping cost.

Thanks Ray, will double check with my amp tech to make sure I get the right resistance.
