'If you want to listen to music, listen to Bach. If you want to enjoy it, listen to Mozart'

I'm not sure who originally said it, but my Grandmother used to say it. I'm actually more of a Bach guy, but I've always liked it anyway.

Unos, dos, tres, catorce- Bono
(Some, 2, 3, 14 for those of you who don't speak Spanish, uno would have been 1, and there are all sorts of conspiracy theories on why he said it, but according to Wikipedia Bono said alcohol may have been involved.)

“Madam, you have between your legs an instrument capable of giving pleasure to thousands - and all you can do is scratch it”

Sir Thomas Beecham to a cellist.

“It is quite untrue that British people don't appreciate music. They may not understand it but they absolutely love the noise it makes.”

Beecham, again.

Mark, the first Beecham quote is one of my favourites.

A relevant one for harp is as follows:

"Try taking the horn outta your mouth."

Miles Davis, responding to John Coltrane's comment that he didn't know how to end his increasingly super-long solos.

I didn't actually make it to HCH, but a few very reliable sources related this quote from Johnny Sansone in the infamous CCHC cabin at Wall-Doxey...

'BLOW that mother****er!'

"If you ain't got timing, you ain't got sh;t."

Now that is a VERY true statement. It's much like what Duke Ellington once said "it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing." A more modern version of that once said to me in my early years by an old black pro musician was, "if it ain't got a groove, then the people will move......but out the door to some other club." Let me tell you, that is 100% the cold, hard, brutal truth!!!

"I love your voice, but you need to put that harmonica back in your pocket." - My wife when I played a song for her in the first year of my harp journey.

"Serve the song." - Grant Dermody (most likely a common saying).

"Bobby, I'm sorry you got a head like a potato." - Frank Zappa OOPS! That is a song lyric!

Interviwer: "Becuase I don't hear any saxophonist now who isn't playing something that you haven't at least sketched out before-maybe you would rather not think about that".

Coltrane: "No,because like it's a big resevoir, that we all dip out of. And a lot of times, you'll find that those things-I listened to John Gilmore kind of closley before I made "Chasin' the Trane," too. So some of those things on there are really direct influences of listening to this cat,you see. But then I don't know who he'd been listening to,so...."

Here's a quote from Tom Petty in today's L.A. Times:
"Everyone thinks they can knock off a 12-bar [blues], but to do it right takes a little time and you have to mature a little bit. I don't think we could have made this record in the '80s. I don't think our heads were in that spot."
(Discussing his latest record, "Mojo".)
