Wondering if others here practice at night while living in an apartment. I have recently moved to North Dakota and now live in a very big apartment but have surrounding neighbors (I used to live in a house). I have no idea about whether any sound is hear and have not received any complaints but nonetheless, I play very quietly at night (certainly helps the technique!). How does everybody else deal with practicing in an apartment?

I try to only play in my living room late at night, or on very quiet harps. (The apartment above me has the same layout so they aren't likely to hear me in the LR unless they are already awake). The best advice is to get to know your neighbors. Play a little during the day and ask if they hear it. Give them your number or tell them to bang on the wall if they hear you late at night.

Why not go and ask the neighbours if they can hear you? You might even meet another musican or a lonely nymphomaniac.

I wouldn't be so cautious. My rule of thumb is: Don't play louder than I rock the TV or stereo. Can you hear their TV? If not then your TV volume is a good indication of where your safe volume is.

I would go introduce myself and tell them about my harp playing but then again, I don't want to invite complaints cause I also might have a neighbor who, once invited, might start looking for things to bitch about. During the day I play as I want but I usually like to get some practice in at night as well. I also just found out there is a state university a mile away with possible practice rooms. And if worst comes to worst I can just go outside and practice around the railroad tracks.

I find my Low F is useful if I am concerned with making too much noise. It doesn't pierce through the walls like my C and D.

railroad tracks are good. trains have a rhythm. plus, if the train blows its' whistle, that is a diminished third. sounds a bit like an overblow.

Hey Adam, how did you practice when it was snowing? In a parka with gloves? In North Dakota it's gonna be a long cold winter here I guess but I guess I'll just have to rough it. Now that's blues. My first album will be called "Frostbite"

The warm breath in my cupped hands kept me from freezing. I also practiced in outdoor but semi-enclosed locations, such as tunnels. Sweat was my problem, not freezing!

I know the problem. My neighbors will bang on the roof during the middle of the day as I'm playing harp completely acoustic. And that's on the Sp20's I haven't opened the backs up on...it sucks. Tempted to one day respond with a cranked up tube amp in response...but I'm too nice. I like the car for practice. It has temperature control if need be and I can throw in a backing track CD. Sound proof, homey, and always available- can't be beat.

I live in a house but have 3 children all under 5 so it's the kids I worry about not the neighbours. So it's the kitchen for me with the door shut or the car on the way home after work.

I was just at the university only 1 mile away from my house and they have practice rooms galore! What is amazing is that they have this huge music department with all these supposed music majors and nobody was practicing!?!

Not too surprising. I studied sax at FSU and it was pretty common to have open rooms in the afternoon and evening. It's after classes so nobody is grabbing practice during their break and after that is when most were(including me) studying or working. Now when I showed up with my horn at 10-11pm...that's when the practice rooms were all filling up. And the line at the Circle K across the street for coffee and red bull was usually just as bad lol
