What are the most standard blues tunes?
This is not limited to songs typical for harp. I want to get on stage at the blues jams and know the progression variation before the band plays through it.
I've searched the forum archive and found a few threads with WAY too much chit chat to sift through. It would be cool if we had a thread with just a list of songs and little or no discussion.
PLEASE CHECK MY MASTER LIST FIRST!

You Don't Love Me was originally done by Willie Cobbs featuring Sammy Lawhorn on guitar.
I'm really almost surprised that none of you have listed as standards two very important ones, but from the general orientation of your lists, many of you either just listen to blues with harmonica or guitar on it only and forget the more horn oriented (but very important) stuff like jump blues.
Here's some to add to your list: Kidney Stew -- Eddie Cleanhead Vinson Good Rocking Tonight --- Roy Brown Okie Dokie Stomp --- Gatemouth Brown Three Hours Past Midnight --- Johnny Guitar Watson Sufferin' Mind --- Guitar Slim Please Send Me Someone To Love --- Percy Mayfield Strange Things Happening (Love Me Or Leave Me) --- Percy Mayfield (also Junior Parker and James Cotton) The Same Old Blues --- Little Milton (Magic Sam)
Five Long Years was originally done by Eddie Boyd. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

Hi: I've added a link to this thread in the MBH webbrain as "Standard Blues Songs". Under that I'm planning on a node/thought for each song with sub links to youtube versions I can find by the various artists the songs are attributed to. If I can find it I may add the history and lyrics for each song.
NOV 7 2010 - got about 40 songs done with anywhere from 1 to 6 links for each song to youtube videos of the standard performers. Plus a link to the Wiki page for songs that have one.

Have a look here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_blues_standards
Also, how about Dimples by John Lee Hooker, and Bluebird blues?
Do you want to include more 'modern' classics too? The Creeper and Blow Wind Blow by James Cotton perhaps?
-edit- John Henry by many artists

Blow Wind Blow was originally done first by Muddy Waters and tho often the harp player credited on the original has been listed as Big Walter Horton, the harp player is actually Little Walter.
Texas Flood was originally done in the late 50's by Larry Davis with Fenton Robinson on guitar and when Stevie Ray first recorded it, he did Fenton Robinson's intro largely note for note and the rest of the guitar playing is largely note for note Albert King from the tune Blues Power, which is on Albert's live classic Live Wire-Blues Power LP. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte
