If you don't have a lot of money go for the Sp20.

I would go for the Special 20, they are a good harmonica and they are cheap.

The difference is not only money. The Meisterklass is a Modular System harmonica that shares all the parts with the other MS series harps where the Special 20 is a handmade harp (reedplates are assembled by a technician) built on the Marine Band platform. I feel that the reeds on the MB are better than the MS harps.

The Meisterklasse is my favorite harp. I like the full covers, the tone of the aluminum comb (brass sounds better but is too heavy), it just feels like a good solid harp. The chrome plated reedplates don't seem to add to the tone so switching out to the standard MS replacement reedplates later won't change the tone for the worse.

For the kind of money you'd spend on a Meisterklass there are a lot of other options too. If you want a long-covered harp Seydel and Suzuki both have less expensive options. I haven't played a Meisterklasse, but I do like the sound of the Blues Harp, which is also an MS series. The Special 20's sound good too though.

I bought a classic meisterklasse about 25 years ago that I paid about $50.00 for at the time-I thought to cost that much it must be an awesome harp-I was disappointed it was good but not all that much better than a special 20 which some of the best harp players play-it is a marine band with a plastic comb

I've owned 2 Meisterklass and hated them.
For less money you can have a much much better brassy Hohner (Crossover).

And if you care for full covers, you can go Suzuki : Firebreath is great and smooth, Hammond is great and cheaper, Promaster is great and cheaper still, Bluesmaster is great and.. dirt cheap.

If your choice is locked beetween Meisterklass and SP20, go for the later. It's a better harp IMO, and you can have 3 of them for the same price.

I used to have a full set of Suzuki Promasters but didn't like them as well as the Meisterklasse, probably because of the equal temperament tuning. I also didn't like the fatter covers (in front) on the newer ones I purchased.

first: there are a lot more harp-types then those two....if you search this forum you 'll find more good options for your money...

second: one Meisterklasse is the same price as three Special 20's...

I bought a meisterklasse - waste of money. Heavy and terribly built. It leaked like crazy. SP20's have great tone and are value priced. I switched to SP20's and never looked back. Once I stopped burning through harps I switched to Seydel 1847's which are much better than the Mesiterklasse.

I have a MS-series MeisterKlasse, and have never played the pre-MS version, which was supposedly a great instrument. Mine makes a lovely paperweight or brass knuckles, or could possibly double as a projectile to hunt small woodland creatures, or be used as a sinker for fishing in heavy currents and deep water. As a harmonica, it's a leaky POS that cost almost 4X as much as a SP20 at the time I got it. SP20 is a pretty damn good harp.

I would advise against the Meisterklasse. I own one. It's pretty, but doesn't play well.

I <3 SP20s. Like others have said, there are many other options to consider as well.

I seem to be the only one that likes the Meisterklasse. I know it was Rev Dan Smith's favorite during the 90's (until he passed away).

All of mine are at least eight years old. Perhaps they were made better back then. Or just the luck of the draw. Maybe I don't know a good harp from a piece of junk.

I don't own any customs but currently own and use the following: MB, LO, Delta frost, PM, SP20, BR, Blues Harp, Dannecker Blues and several MS hybrids. The Meisterklasse is still my favorite.

Ozark, have you ever played a Seydel Blues Favorite? Those covers are pretty similar to the Meisterklasse. Actually, I think my next big harp purchase is going to be a 1847 with Blues Favorite covers. The Sessions have the same general cover shape too.

Ozark, if it works for you-that's all that really matters. 80-90 bucks is too much of a gamble for me to pay again. I do like the cover plate shape, however. Perhaps yours are just a better lot, and I got a lemon(probably got mine in '93 or so). BBQ Bob has talked about the older pre-MS Meisterklasses being a thing of beauty, though-and I would assume, more consistent with build quality.

@nacoran: I've looked at the Blues Favorite but haven't tried one yet. I hope they're not ET.

@toddlgreene: The Meisteklasse' I got were $54 with free shipping (at the time). I agree, $90 is too high, close to custom prices, especially if the quality has gone downhill.

I still like the old (non-MS) Meisterklasses. Yes, they were pricy, but I love the tone of them, especially in the higher keys. Hard to pinpoint what it is I hear, but there's a certain characteristic that I really like. This most likely comes from the shape of the cover plates, which are now impossible to get, unless someone clones them.

As for the current MS Meisterklasse vs. the Special 20, I would recommend the Special 20.

I will still keep hoping and asking that Hohner produces more harps with chrome plated reed plates, as this just gives the harp a more classy look.

Ozark, you can get them equal, compromise or just, however you want them, and tuned all the way from High A to Low Low F. You can even get tunings like diminished or spiral, or even lay out your own tuning using their configurator.

http://www.seydel1847.de/epages/Seydel.sf/en_GB/?ObjectID=3440&Locale=en_GB

Or, if you ask nice they'll even put a long cover on an 1847.
