He is my master. I think he is one of the best young harmonica player living now.
I watched his videos and I am trying figure out some of his licks. I got some triplets staff but I am still working on that what he calls inflection. Any suggestions? Please, please help me.
Anyway is anybody here who likes Jason's music and playing?

Thanks!
All the best to all of you and I am looking forward to hear from you soon.

I first heard Jason Ricci's palying last year on youtube, and I must say that I was amazed and baffled. He makes tremendous use of scales and his playing is quiet melodic for blues harp. There are only two other player that I know of that can touch him in terms of skill with speed: John Popper and Sugar Blue. I really can not say that one player is better than the other because they all have there own style. I know that he learned his overblow technique from Adam Gussow and that Mr. Gussow holds him in high regard. To me he is one of the modern innovators of our humble instrument.

Hey,

Try to copy some Pat Ramsey's stuff. Not that it's anywhere close to easy to play like him tone-wise , speed-wise or expression-wise.. but i found his stuff easier to understand , Jason took it "a couple" of steps further, WAY too advanced for a beginner like me.

You're gonna need one of those slowing down progs. I use "Transcribe!" - very convinient, you can change pitch or speed on the fly.

I simply have the latest version of QuickTime on my computer (comes with virtually all computers for free) and if you go into the A/V Controls, you can slow down the track to as slow as half the speed (without changing the pitch). This has been a god-send for transcribing tabs.

You're probably going to have to practice scales. If you haven't already done this, check out some of his lessons on youtube. Try to get major, minor, blues, major pentatonic, and minor pentatonic scales starting on any note, which means you'll have to learn how to overblow and overdraw. Once you learn the scale then play it different ways, like playing it in thirds and doing this in 4/4 and 3/4 time. It's a lot of work. On youtube, Jason says he practiced some of these concepts for 8 hours a day to get it right! Wow! I'm trying to do some of the same things, but I still have to learn to overblow hole number 1 and all of the overdraws. Trying to find the time to do all of this is tough sometimes, but I'm going to try to get what I can. Check out his "Blood on the Road" and "Rocket Number 9" cds, they are both great. Good luck and keep practicing.

I was fortunate enough to see Jason Ricci play live when he visited my local blues club last November, and I have to say the live videos on youtube don't do him justice. Not only is he an incredible player, but he gets an incredible sound out of his rig and his backup band is incredible in their own right.....

Listen to his playing on Walter Trout's song 'Child Of Another Day' - Absolutely incredible blues harp playing. I love his little single warbles - almost sounds as if it's Irish Trad! Go maith!

Finally after months of watching Jason's Youtube videos, I decided to buy "Rocket Number 9". The first time I listend through the songs I didn't like it very much. Until I graduated from high school, I didn't know there was any other kind of music other than Country and 80's hairband rock. I got into Blues and alternative rock in college, but I never quite dug Punk rock or Jazz. Anyway, I love to listen to Jason play, and Shawn Starsky is absolutely a fabulous guitarist. So I decided to give it another spin, this time with an open mind about other genres of music. I have to say this cd has grown on me in a week, and I am really getting into it. Adam said on a public service announcement on U-Tube that it was "extensions of the blues". So if you there is anybody out there getting bored with the retro-trip blues standards, go ahead and get this CD. Take it from a guy who was skeptical, it is worth it, and there is a butt-load of licks and riffs to learn. (if you can follow the speed demon that is) I also found myself rewinding Starsky's solos and stealing ideas off of him. Definetely a talented group of musicians we can all learn from.

I saw Jason Ricci and New Blood last night. It was absolutely F@#$ing awsome! I have never been to a bar/club and seen a band rock that hard for that long. Shawn Starski said before the first set he was a little nervouse because it had been a month since their last gig. But if they made any mistakes, I sure as hell didn't notice.

Being a harp player I showed up a fan of Jason Ricci, but I left a fan of Jason Ricci and New Blood!

They even made a fan out of my wife who just went because I begged her!

Find a show near you and go!

Don't get me wrong - I'm not trying to be negative - I think Jason's playing is awsome, but I think that there's a danger for us mortals in that if we aspire too much to that kind of virtuosity then we may be in for disappointment.

In the past, I've heard stuff and thought 'wow', then, when it seems impossible to get it, I've given up. I think that Charlie Parker once did the same thing (it's in that biopic when he goes to chuck his instrument in the river after hearing some other legend - someone correct me on the details here, they're a little hazy.)

Anyway, since coming back to the harp and hearing kudzurunner saying, 'I'm not too great at doing this type of run' or 'that type of warble' I've realised that all players will have limitations in certain areas, and that is great comfort.

I think that if you can just produce a clean 4 draw with a sweet vibrato then you will please yourself and give great pleasure to your audience. The fancy stuff might come in time, but if not then our best is all we can do. It's still great fun to play the instrument.

@ Jeff: thanks for the QuickTime tip. You may have saved my sanity.

Edit: The bit I said above about 'great pleasure' just reminded me of something I once heard that made me laugh at the time. During WWII, some Brit conductor, Thomas Beecham, said to one of his cellists:

"Madam, you have a beautiful instrument between you legs, which is capable of giving great pleasure. So, why do you insist on scratching it so?"

Jason Ricci is remarkable. I saw him live in a bar in Seattle and left breathless. But even thinking about trying to emulate some of what he does on the harmonica is like a beginning guitar player trying to figure out licks from Jimi Hendrix's repetoire. Almost beyond comprehension for a beginner like me. I'll remain for awhile a fan and be satisfied with that. Hopefully someday down the road after much improvement I will be able to reproduce some of his tough harp licks.
