I thought I'd start a new topic on 1st position. For me it's my weakest position in that it seems that you kind of have to turn every thing around from 2nd position and there's less harp to work with. That's why I'm always blown away by a masterful 1st position performance.
Some of my favorite performances: Charlie Musselwhites "38 Special" on his "Signature" CD, Kim Wilson "Trust My Baby"(type in trust my baby on youtube search),Rod Piazza's "Murder in the first degree".
Any favorites out there?

Sure, Lester plays some mean first position on the live album with Red Devils (King-King) I don't remember the songs name right now but it's an old SBII song, another song to check out is the last cut on the album that Big Walter did with Carey Bell The last cut on this includes some dynamite first position playin' by Horton. I do believe that he is using a 14-hole Marine Band in the key of C. Best HS

hoochie coochie man was in first positon. I find first position when playing folk and country music but its good because i preferthe sound of the lower harps so i could use a Charp straight harp rather than a high Fharp cross harp

Some other cool first position things are Kim Wilson's "Don't lose your eye". Rick Estrin's cover of "Steady Rollin' Man". Also Jason Ricci's first is the best I've ever heard, here's a youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdmUUyQVTrE. The best first position you will ever hear. Also "Ludella" by Jimmy Rodger's has Little Walter with some awesome first. And of course, all Jimmy Reed stuff.

Hoochie Coochie man is one of my favorite first position songs. Eric Clapton also has a rendition of this with a pretty cool 1st position harp part (although I think the harpist isn't bending down the 3 hole draw down far enough). Also Jimmy Reed does a lot of upper octave first position stuff. The cool thing about the upper octave is its pretty easy since its basically the same as the middle octave of second position playing except with the blows and draws reversed. ---------- "Without music, life would be a mistake" -Nietzsche

"cheery pink and apple blossem white" by the Thunderbirds. Has a pure, sweet sound with a spanish flair. Fantastic 1st position song. One of the ones I have stuck in my head. The only way I can get them out is to learn them...should I be on medication?.....naaa

This is SOOO outre, but believe me, it works.
There is a hip-hop song, recently popular, called "Low" by flo.ri.da. I play the backbeat in 1st po. "Em". ( I use a Lee Oskar Bm harp ). Have the amps set on tremolo, delay, and reverb. I found this techno-pop mod, and it WORKS! Even my 25 year old nephew was so impressed, he had to call his mates in SD and the Bay...LIVE! Upon further experimentation, there are alot of hip-hop progressions that this fits. ONLY 1st po. Find the key and the groove and try it out. I'm telling you, the youngsters love it!
