Jon Gindick has recently posted a YouTube video on 3rd position within the past month or so. The URL is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HbmXEFVw5o&NR=1

He also plays Good Morning Little School Girl in 3rd at

James Cotton's "the Blues Keep Falling" and Little Walter's "Got to Go" are some essetial classic 3rd position songs. Allot of Jason Ricci's stuff is in 3rd. "Dodecahedron" from his new album Rocket Numer Nine is awesome third position, so is "Mr. Satan". Dr. Gussow is also an incredible 3rd position player, search Satan and Adam "Ode to Billy Joe" on youtube, great stuff

Tweed my understanding of 3rd Position playing is when you play mostly draw notes in the middle of the harp ie holes 4 to 6 on which hole 4 draw is the root note ie key of D on a C harp. This is outlined in the Gindick video.
The position you described is, as I understand, 2nd Pos ie mostly draw notes ie holes 1 to 5 draw and 6 blow which on an A harp would put you in the key of E.

One of my favorites by the late, great Gary Primich swingin' in the key of C on a Bb harp..

You might want to check out
http://www.heyd.org/harp/bluesscale.html

3rd position has an easily accessible (with bends) lower and middle two-octave blues scale. Very nice.

Also the Gindick video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HbmXEFVw5o
is good but gives you a bit of a bum steer on the blues scale, if I recall.

Typical easy 3rd positon tunes: St Louis Blues, St James' Infirmary, Summertime. You can just about avoid the low overblow.

Hang on a sec...When would you need the low overblow for third position? It doesn't occur in the blues scale or the major scale when playing slant harp.

Blues scale:

-1 -2" -2 -3"' -3" +4 -4

Major Scale:
-1 +2 -2' -2 -3" -3 -4' -4

I think moving on to other positions is where a little bit of theory helps everyone out. When you start learning Root, flat third (or blue third), fourth, etc. etc, you can figure out by the notes of the harp where all your blue scales are. Another poster up above said he was under the impression third position was draw notes on the center of the harp. Although that is a very easy and complete scale, you can play third position all over the harp.

Hi Oxharp--

This is a book I have not tried yet--but it will be the one I buy next:

http://www.harmonicamasterclass.com/explorin2.htm

I have "Basic Blues Harmonica" of the Masterclass series and it is excellent--a little too basic for me at this point, but I have been learning great stuff from it anyway. I am looking forward to studying third position in depth.

With the CD that comes with the book, there is lots of real jamming to be done (at least on the one I have) so it is really hands (& lips) on all the way. I expect to be buying several of the books in this series. . .

Oldwailer,

I recommend that you check out David Barrett's "Classic Chicago Blues Harp #1 Book/CD".

There are a lot of techniques that David covers including the blow bends at the high end of the harp and throat vibrato. Also, there are some decent riffs to borrow and a couple of songs to jam to.

Got it, Blind Melon--I'm planning to work on several of this series--very good stuff. . .Chicago #1 and the third position books are in my near future. I'm really having fun with this--along with my normal work on Adam's lessons. . .
