I'd like to pose this question to all of you out there: Is the 3 hole draw or blow the one hole to never play alone? Let me know how you feel about this "mysterious Hole", if it's part of your thang or if you avoid ever hitting it at all cost. I'll give you my own personal and probably technically wrong, experience with this hole. I hope to hear from some of you!

Aside from the tonic 2 hole draw, the 3 hole draw is the second most important and used hole on the harmonica. It IS the "blues note". Maybe you can explain your question better?

Also, bear in mind that the "tonic" 2 hole draw is also the same as the 3 hole blow. Thus the blow is used quite often. I don't know when you really wouldn't use the 3 other maybe 3rd position. ---------- ChipperHarp http://www.myspace.com/chipperharp

Thanks Jeff, your reply answered my questioned for me. I'd been told by a more experienced harp player to never play the 3 hole by itself, which never made since to me since it sounds so sweet to work that hole! Of course I've ignored that tip and have been working that hell out of that 3 hole. Check out my take of "Walking the dog" on youtube to hear my doing my thang with it. thanks for sounding off on this for me!

Maybe he means that he generally only plays the 3 hole with the 4 hole draw sneaking in. The honking sound of those two notes together is a very characteristic sound of most of the blues greats like Rice Miller, Paul Butterfield, Big Walter....
Though you should definitely use the 3 hole draw by its self also. There are contexts for both sounds.

E.e.e...good to see you haven't changed a bit...
As far as the 3 BLOW goes... besides its playablity.. there are riffs that can't be played without using the 3 blow.. If you for example want to play something from Slim Harpo, you'll be running out of breath or to be more precise...FILLING UP with breath because of all the draw notes..after many attemps it finally struck me that at some point he was going to the 3 blow instead of the 2 draw....since that "discovery" several other songs that gave me "air-problems" became playable for me... As far as the 3 DRAW and its bends....most of it is been said already...here...and in Adam's videos...hard to control..but life is not the same without it....

When Kim Wilson is asked what makes his playing so good, he says that it is his 3 draw.
