I just want to here the thoughts of my fellow Modern Blues Harmonica members on the great Stevie Wonder. Yes, I realize that he doesn't play blues but he has done some great things even from an early age on the harmonica, primarily the chromatic. Also, if anyone could let me know what brand of harmonica Stevie plays, it would be much appreciated.

I think i saw him play a hohner super 64x chromatic in a recent video on yt. Most likely very customized.

Warbleman,

Richard Hunter's excellent book, Jazz Harp, has a couple of transcriptions of Stevie Wonder's chromatic playing. I think it's not that hard to get hold of the basics of his signature style... that is, to hear what he's doing. Playing it is a different matter.

Richard is also an excellent chromatic (and diatonic) player, well worth a listen!

When I was a teenager I listened to Stevie (he was Little Stevie, then). It was his playing that got me interested in harmonica. Actually, my first harmonica was a Hohner 64 Chromatic, the model he played at the time, that my mother bought me for Christmas. She bought it through a Sears and Roebuck catalog for a whopping $20. I remember teaching myself the solo from "For Once In My Life" (though I'm sure I couldn't play it now). There was also an instrumental album from 1968 titled "Eivets Rednow" (Stevie's name didn't appear anywhere on the sleeve) that featured Stevie on harmonica on all but two tracks and on those he played keyboard. There was a beautiful version of "Alfie". It's available on CD.
