G'day all and greetings from Down Under, I was wondering if anyone on the forum has attended one of Jon Gindick's jam camps. It is a long way to go for a few days of harp tuition but after seeing a few things on Utube the first class instructors who attend would make the trip worth it. I just finished watching Annie Raines and Dennis Gruenling just jamming some 12 bar blues.
Besides I have never been to the USA the home of the blues and it would be good to do a pub crawl of some of the blues clubs, regards Neil

I recently attended Jon Gindick's camp in Clarksdale in March. Adam Gussow was one of the world-class instructors there. I believe he is slated to be at the Clarksdale camp in '09 too.
I went there knowing a little bit. I hoped to have my playing explode while I was there. It was sort of a silly expectation. But once I realized THAT (and that these very generous and talented musicians had actually given me at least a year's worth of great stuff to work on) it was such an emotional and fulfilling thing for me.

Now, if I were you, I'd scrape together any spare change, hock the children and perform unsavory acts in dark alleys to get the funds to secure your spot at next year's Clarksdale camp. I'm sure the other camp locations provide the same magnificent instruction, but no other location IS CLARKSDALE, BABY! The combination of people and place cannot be beat. My thanks go out to Adam, Cheryl Arena, the incomparable Jimi Lee, the stupefyingly mind-blowing Billy Gibson, Brian Purdy and Jon Gindick.

My playing has improved markedly since I got back home to Birmingham and into the woodshed. That's where a lot of the rubber has to hit the road, as I'm sure you know. And now I know too.

Here's a video of me playing at the camp jam. It was freaking fun, man!

very cool video, bb.

i have been to one of the camps. a couple of years back. gussow, gruenling costa were a few of the coaches. it was very cool and improved my playing.

another idea would be for you to check out dave barrets'(?) masterclass series. from the stuff i read on it, it would be a great learning experience, too. and it is in california most of the time which would make your flight less expensive, maybe.

Thanks for the info B flat and eharp, it sounds like it would be worth it to attend the Jam Camp. I have a couple of books and CD's by David Barrett all very good instructional material and I will look up those Master Classes. I must admit that the Jam Camp concept sounds great where a whole bunch of folks all with the same interest and zest for learning get together for a few days. Regards Neil

Well, I've nevfer been to Jam Camp yet--but I sure plan to as soon as I can afford it! The thing that draws me is the videos of people playing--they're just having so much fun--screw what it does for my playing--I just wanna go have that much fun!

if all you want is to have that much fun playing, go to the bean blossom blues festival. it is sponsored by bushman harmonicas and is definetly harp orientated. there are campfire jams all over the campgrounds. and the bands are great. this years headliner is rod piazza. and the price is a great deal!

not affiliated. just a 5 year veteran.

Bob,
HELL YEAH! Clarksdale was smokin'! I was there with you and I agree it was great. If any of you guys (or gals) are thinking about it, I too highly recommend it. Be prepared to learn ALOT, no matter what level you are at. One thing for sure, you will hear some awesome harp playing at any one of these camps. Jon brings in the best players you could find anywhere. Some of the best times were after the seminars and teaching was done for the day. The instructors would sit around and just do their stuff. When do you get to hear three or four master harp players just kick back and rip it? Amazing, awesome and fantastic are understatements!
PS: I sent you a message through Utube.

If you had to choose...
Which would you go to and why?
David Barrett and Joe Filisko's Masterclass Workshop
Masterclass Workshop
or
Jon Gondick's Harp Jam Camp

Well if I had the funds to go (unfortunately I don't though).
For me the choice would be Dave Barretts Workshop.
Purely because he has the incredible Dennis Gruenling and Joe Filisko teaching and where I'm at now I feel I could learn the most from those guys.

Having said that Jon's Jam Camp looks great too. You have Adam and Cheryl Arena teaching who are both great players and of course Brian Purdy from HarpGear amps is there too.

I think any player would benefit enormously from either course. The answer (in my opinion) is to see who's teaching the kind of blues you want to be playing. Then decide who you think would be the best to learn from.

Alternatively if you can afford it go one year to one and then the next year to the other.

Or you could do a private workshop with Dennis Gruenling. Tailored entirely to you. It's pretty cool.

I had several one on one multiple hour sessions with Dennis over a few days this past summer. It was amazing. I think it is the best kind of learning experience there is. Get in touch with him.

I did the Masterclass in May of this year in San Jose--and that's what I's do again--in fact, I've already paid the tuition and registered for my classes.

Of course, if I'm able to afford it, I'll be going to Clarksdale too!!
