Does anyone know the differences between reverb and delay and the pros and cons of each for harp playing? I've generally assumed that delay was just a longer lasting reverb. Is this correct? I've been wanting to buy a delay or reverb pedal for a while and am wondering which is better.

Delay is echo, dont know a synomym for reverb. If you'd play in a big hall or a staircase, that's natural reverb. I'd get a delay pedal first, but I already got one.

Reverb is your woman backtalking when you say something.

Delay is how long before she starts.

Great question. They're very different effects.

Delay--at least if we're talking pedals--takes an exact replica of a discrete moment of the signal being produced and adds it in, all at once, at a discrete moment AFTER the original signal. A short delay gives a slapback sound: rockabilly guitar. A longer delay gives the effect of being in a large space and hearing an echo. It sounds like an echo from the back of the hall--a repetition of the signal, delayed.

Reverb is much more multidirectional. Instead of beginning at a discrete moment AFTER the original signal, and instead of consisting of an exact replica of the original waveform, reverb is a tumbling mixture of various post-original-signal replicas, all of them decaying at DIFFERENT speeds. Some players feel that reverb is much more organic sounding. It can also bury the original signal, if you're not careful. The best reverb sounds, for my money, are by retro guitarists like Alex Schultz and Dave Specter (Delmark's house guitarist).

It takes practice to use these two effects. At one point I used a Boss DD-2 delay pedal into one amp and a Kendrick reverb tank through the other. Delay and reverb, but only one effect through each amp. Eventually I sold the reverb tank and just used delay.
