Everyone of us on this forum is guilty of this at one time or another. Doesn't matter how good you play, as Adam says: you got to leave some space. Toots was in some zone!

If I could play that bad my worst problem would be how to feed myself without getting the harp too far from my lips. I thought it was great!!

Well, personally I think that this seems like the kind of song where space isn't needed as much as usual, but I may be wrong. Also, if he left space there would be a lot of awkward pauses since the lady wouldn't know what to sing :-)

Definitely the wrong example. Toots is a Jazz Harpist with such notable hits as Midnight Cowboy and the Sesame Street theme. Here he is playing graciously. He IS the featured star of this duet: Notice the subtle call response. She wants him to play and she wants to adlib and "interpret."
Overplaying is better seen when you have a band and the harp player plays through the vocals, the guitar and other solos, and seems like the one man wrecking machine he/she is.
When playing, one should pick how they will play on the song such as dominate (Whammer Jammer) call/response (most blues songs) rhythm (Giels' Back to Get Ya) accents or solos such as Tome Petty' Last Dance for Mary Jane, Beatles Love Me Do, Pogues Dirty Old Town, etc.)

O.K. Understand, Toot's playing is great (wish I could have heard that whole solo at the end). My point was, even if you're playing really good stuff, you have to leave room for the singer. And that's not any lady, that's Peggy Lee! Toots can get away with it, us mere mortals couldn't. Toots was in a moment there, but if he did that all the time, he would soon not be welcome to accompany singers. Maybe the whole video was a set-up to showcase Toots, but from Peggy Lee reactions, I don't think so. You can watch her trying to figure out where to fit in. Perhaps, she should have stepped back and let Toots get it out of his system. LOL

But she did say, "You play a song on the harmonica and I will interpret . . . " But I see your point. His stuff is awesome though w/ my fav being Midnight Cowboy. I know they adore him in France.

I adore him, too. On his UT stuff, you can feel the joy in his playing. "Feel the love", if you will.
