Anybody out ever used the pignose hog 20 rechargeable amp? I know they are not high power but how do they sound? Trash or treasure?

------------------- (must... learn... to... read...)
sorry, I realized after I posted I don't have the Hog 20, I have the Pignose 7-100. The small guitar amp.
So my post is likely meaningless unless anyone is considering the small one... -------------------
I have one.
I think you really need a good mic to get a good sound.
Here is what I discovered with mine.
I have an old Sony all-in-one mini stereo (1990) that has that Karaoke thing, and came with a Sony 600 ohm impedance. mic (F-VJ10) I can get a nice fat tone and that glassy silky overtone, but the same mic with the Pignose, I get an amped sound, but it isn't as dirty, nor gives up that overtone sound as it does with the cheap stereo.
I guess the stereo is too cheap to produce crisp and clean and compresses and breaks up, like a harp needs, and the pignose is a bit better able to produce a cleaner clearer sound.
So if you have a good mic that dynamically handles the harp better, it should do well.
I do like that amp for the money and in all other respects, and want to be fair, as I have only used 1 mic.
I guess I could turn it up on full and wail and see how it sounds, normally just noodle with it in the house when I need the amped sound.
hope that helps.

That still helps Harpmonkey, 7-100, hog 20, all from the same litter. I take it you are pleased with the overall quality of the product. It just doesn't deliver that dirty sound, right out of the box? I really love the portable aspect of the rechargeable. I wonder if something like a Bottle-o-Blues would help the sound or if I just need to get used to the idea of being tethered to an outlet?

It is a very solid product. I think Pignose folks put their heart into their product.
I would recommend it, but since it is music, and art, what someone comes away with is subjective.
But I would not hesitate to take a "Pignose out to dinner"...
(yo, geordie, oldwailer, ya'll hear that song????)
I took my Pignose out to dinner. No more eatin in the swamp.
I said I take my Pignose out to dinner, cuz she makes me want ot romp.
She don't want no bisquits and gravy, she's only wants cornbread and greens.
My baby she ain't very good lookin, But man get a look at them jeans...
or somthin.

The 20 is what I use..... with a Madcat Shaker Dynamic Mic, Holy grail reverb, and a Fishman EQ..... Dynamics don't put out enough signal to amplify well on the pignose 20 without some boost from the Fishman.... also use a Danelectro "Corned Beef" Reverb occasionally and that drives the 20 just fine.....
Got mine on E-Bay about 3 years ago... Think now I would prefer a 30 but haven't run across a Deal that I can live with yet....... It uses 2 6 Volt sealed Lead acid Batteries and you can get replacements from Battery Mart for about 1/3 the cost of pignose batteries.. if you keep them charged they should last about 3 years. Jus replaced mine for about $20. I have my whole rig in a luggage small pack with wheels on it and can pull it around anywhere.....Whole deal weighs about 25 lbs.

I got a Hog 30 about a year ago--seems very good for what I do--which isn't really very loud or crunchy--just acoustic. I run two mics with voice and a guitar into a Beringer battery-powered little mixer with some effects--and then pump the whole act into this little Hog. Works great--but it's just me and the wife playing folk music and xmas stuff--no real loud stuff.
By the way--I used to have a home-made rig that worked great for about 4 hours of play--just get one of those battery jumpers for a car--about 40 bucks at Wal-Mart, I think--then get a converter in the same store--about the same 40 bucks--wire the converter into the jumper and charge the jumper up good. Walla! You got 120 volts output from the plugs on the converter and you can run pretty much any amp (I never had a big one on it) on the street without plugging into a regular outlet. The rig is a little heavy--I think the Hog 30 is easier to use. . .
Over the years I have had two of the little Pignose amps and now this Hog 30--I don't think Pignose makes anything that isn't good--but with amps, it's not just what is good--but more what sounds good to you. I liked the little Pigs so well I used to use them to pre-amp into my big guitar amp to get the Pig sound--but that's just me--your mileage may vary. . .

Harpmonkey--I like the song you started here--reminds me of an old Blind Blake song I used to do called "That'll Never Happen No More." I had to stop singing it though as time moved inexorably into the present and the idea of "politically correct" got popular--mainly I realized that women were sick of being seen as objects and all that shit--er, crap (I will of course disavow all knowledge of ever saying that). Anyway, the song had one lyric I do still remember, thanks to your song:
"I met a woman, just a pigmeat some, Big old me I followed her home."
Something like that--come to think of it--it was when I got married that I had to stop singing it. . .

Madcat shaker Microphone (fits between your fingers)
Holy grail reverb (Electro Harmonics is the company)
Fishman EQ is a really a Guitar Equalization gadget with Gain, output level controls as well as some other nice features.. Originally got it from Joe Furgeson who at one time ran "Joe's Virtua; Harmonica Shop" on the web ... No longer does it but he is a great singer and Harp player was one of the "Kalamazoo Allstars" from MI. Fishman is the manuifacturer. You can probably google all these manufacturers ....
Corned Beef is a small Guitar pedal Reverb made by Danelectro.
Coast-toCoast harmonicas handles the shaker Mics and Danelectro as well as all the harp brands.
E-mail me (mention the forum) at pa.sundog@gmail.com and Ill send you the link.

oldwailer you and I are about the same age.
PC ain't got no hold on me.
Blues is (should be) man's last retreat.
If we leave that we might as well cut off our own stuff and hand over the pouch.
We don't hate, and we don;t demean woman nor any man, we just put the feelings out there, cuz if you don't you just might as well die.
and to those who accuse the bluesman of disrespecting anybody;
and as Bo Diddly said:Before you accuse me, take a look at yourself.
Now I have to see if I can find that pigmeat song.
I may even have to sell the bitch's car, so I can buy it...

Sundog, Thanks for the links! I checked them all out. Looks like some good stuff. My money being what it is, looks like i'll have to build the system like Jonny Cash did that car. "one piece at a time" I been using a po-boy rig that sounds better than you might think. Blowing straight into an old coffee can. Back porch blues into a folgers can. A possom in the slow cooker.Life is Good!

OK, Harpmonkey, I'm fairly convinced--although the PC has me by the balls--at least You Tube does.
So I searched around a bit and found some lyrics to Blind Blakes song, "That'll never happen no more:"
I met a girl at the cabaret Pretty papa won't you come my way Her old man knew what I was all about Waiting back at home just to throw me out He broke my nose and he split my chin Don't you come around here again He chased me through the kitchen and out the door Hit me with a chair till my head got sore
That'll never happen no more That'll never happen no more That'll never happen no more That'll never happen no more
Was in Chicago winter and fall I had to wear my overalls I was poor but it wasn't my fault I'm used to eating chicken now I'm eating salt I met a girl just a pigmeat some Big fat fool me, I followed her She pulled a gun out and she took all my dough I didn't eat my heart out and I didn't get sore Cause that'll never happen no more
That'll never happen no more That'll never happen no more That'll never happen no more That'll never happen to me no more
I think that's pretty close to what I used to do--there are a couple of versions on YT I think http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiNmz9frY5g&feature=related is the best.
By the way--it isn't a 12-bar--I don't know if Blind Blake ever did a 12-bar.
I think Dave Van Ronk once did the song on an album. . .

Sundog, Talk to me about the Madcat shaker mic. How do you hold that rascal? Cord up or down? Between your fingers or cup the whole thing? Sure I could figure it out if I had it in my hands but it's hard to tell from the picture.

I position it with the business end of mic between my ring and middle finger (Left Hand) with the grill looking at the bottom of my cupped Harp. It makes a pretty tight enclosure with both hands and that really gives it some volume....Volume control is outside back of left hand and looking right at me. Have developed the habit of turning the VC down to 0 as soon as I stop playing, thus eliminating any chance of squeal from the Amp. Cord kind of just hangs out there...Volume control is only effective for about the last third of the travel otherwise it just quiets the mic completely.. Tried em' with switches but they always POP! when turned on or off.

Well done sir, well done indeed. With a regular mic, the hand effects are lost. Sounds like they are fully intact with the Madcat.
