I am looking for a harp with just tunning, sealed comb, just tunning and screw on cover plates.

The hohner harps that have seen that fit the bill are the marnine band deluxe and the blues harp, can someone let me know if they think the extra money for the marine bacd belux is worth it, and how does the sound compare beteen the two harps.

Do marine bands and blues harps have the samew reed plates anb reeds?

Also, do seydel do the 1847 harmonicas in just tuning?

Thanks, Ryan

I don't own a MB Deluxe, so I can't tell you the difference in sound. But I do own several Blues Harps and I know that the two reed plates are not the same. Blues Harp reed plates are part of the modular system line. I'm 99% sure MB Deluxe is not.

The mb deluxe is my harp of choice though i did start on a blues harp. The mb deluxe is the same size as a standard mb therefore slightly smaller than a blues harp but for me the mb deluxe plays much better than the standard mb and a blues harp yet retains all the sound of an mb. So my advice would be to get a bit more cash together and try a mb deluxe

The MB Deluxe is far better than the Blues Harp and any of the MS Series harps for that matter. Though, being a beginner, you don't need to start on a $55 harp. I would get a regular Marine Band or Special 20 as even a stock MB/Sp20 is much better than a Blues Harp. (The actual reeds of the MBDeluxe are identical to a regular MB. The only difference is the screws make it a little more airtight and the open coverplates make it a LOT louder)

One very minor thing that should be noted is that none of Hohner's harps are tuned to pure just-intonation. They are a compromised tuning that is very close to just-intonation. The old Hohners that Little/Big Walter, Sonny Boy used were tuned to JI though.

Why are you so sold on getting a harp with screws? If it's to replace reeds, you should know that the MB Deluxe doesn't have replaceable reedplates like the Blues Harp.

I have been playing for a while now, but I have been playing suzuki promasters.

I would be happy if suzuki brought out a promaster with long reeds and just tunning, I know they are bringing out the fabolous harmonica, but I have no idea when it will be out and I think it would be out of my price range.

The promasters are good harps but I have recently started playind blues and the promasters don't have the right sound, so I thought I would get a few new harps just for playing the blues.

I would rather have screw on plates so I can have access to the reeds to remove dirt, change the gap size or tune ect.

If you're willing to pay $60 for a MBDeluxe and $40+ for Promasters, I think saving up for a Fabulous is not that big of a stretch. Compared to the Japan prices, it'll probably be $85-100. It even has Promaster coverplates - so it's EXACTLY what you're looking for. And it's on sale in Japan. So it should be out very soon for the rest of us.

Also, Brad Harrison's harmonica the B-Radikal which has already won some awards for it's ingenuity and design is coming out this fall I believe. It's going to be an amazing custom harp with everything you're looking for.

I recommend you get on his mailing list and take a look at the harp:

It looks like a harmonica from 200 years in the future!

That harrison harp looks really interesting- the coverplates almost look like a metal turbolid.

Another alternative would be a Seydel Soloist Pro. It fits all your criteria and its cheaper than a MBD-at least in the USA.

Tombo,
If you're playing crossharp on a Bb, you are actually playing in the key of F. I don't guess I understand your question on the low keys. What are ya needin to help with? They are just tuned an octave lower than the standard key. If you play the blues scale on the high end of a low G starting at (6 blow going up to 9 blow), it would sound the same as a high G starting from 2 draw to 6 blow, if that makes sense.

Bluesnut, yes, you can buy individual reeds. But it sounds like Ryan is looking for a harp like the Suzuki's or Blues Harp with replaceable reedplates. You can replace all of the reeds in less than 3 minutes for half that price with their screw assembly and replaceable reedplates.

The MBDeluxe is going to take some decent customization knowledge and time to go in there and replace the reeds individually, set the gaps, etc.
