Hello all,
This has probably been covered before--but I haven't usually paid a lot of attention to electronic discussions, because I have always considered myself an acoustic player. Anyway. . .
I have a Pignose Hog 30 for an amp that I use for busking--I run it from a little Behringer mixer so that I can blug a guitar and a couple of mikes in to amplify my wife and I when we play out in the open. This works just great for most things.
Well, I recently hooked this rig up in my woodshed and started playing a little harp through it for grins--Wow! That's a whole 'nuther thang!
Well, the little Behringer has no FX on it. So, what the hell--I hooked up my Alesis Fire-wire mixer that I usually use as a component in my home recording studio--it's just a little 8-channel mixer--but it has about 100 FX presets.
COOL! I could get real into this electronic stuff after all! I always thought this was just for the pros--nobody told me it was just plain fun.
So here's my question: I need an FX box that is battery powered so I can use it on the street. (The Alesis isn't battery powered). I would also like to keep things compact and easy to carry around--so a big old converter unit won't work--is there such a thing as a box that would put out a bunch of effects without having to have 87 boxes like the guitar players do?

Beringer makes the V-Amp, it's an amp simulator with built in effects that you can set and save as pre-sets. Line 6 makes a similar product called the Pod, you may want to check these out. They may be pricey but will save you purchasing "87" effects! ;)
Some other companies offer multi-effects pedals with pre-sets as well, DOD used to make one that allowed you to combine effects and save the settings, it was just an effects unit without the amp simulator but the Beringer or line 6 sound pretty good from what I've heard. Line 6 has some demo's on their website, mostly as a guitar effect but it can be used for Harp.
Any of these should be able to drive the Pignose and you can use them for recording to PC as well if you are so inclined.

Hey Scoltx,
Thanks for taking the time to answer my question--I'll check out the Beringer one tomorrow--since I'll be near a Guitar Center. . .
Thanks again!

Just watched some videos on youtube by buddah, Jason Ricci and others about effects for harp. Great stuff. Harmonica is really starting to show it's true potential. Best thing since the guitar went electric!!.

My 2 cents: Look up the current or past Korg "Pandora" toneworks effects boxes for guitar. They're not going to be fast playing effect switching, but between songs would work. They're handheld sized practice based effects, and I've played the harp through them before. Battery powered, and pack a lot of interesting effects and things in them for usually around 200 bucks new. I have an older model that's blue and about the size of a cigarette pack. Next time you and me and Snakes are all in a room, I'll bring it over. Here's what it's doing in current years:

here's a photo from the 'net with the mid 90's version I have for comparison. http://www.performing-musician.com/pm/nov08/images/DressingRooms_05.jpg
Again, not a stompy style box, but can do multiple presets and program to switch between songs or fast hands if you're playing.

I've been thinking of trying this, and it's under 100 clams. I've got a guitar to use it on too, but you might be able to try it & return it if not to taste.
