We all know that Adam, apart from being a fantastic Harp player, is also an enthusiastic runner. I thought that in the wake of the Olympics I should think hard about how much 'woodshedding' successful Olympians put in to achieve their goals. To be good at anything you need to practice & I have heard that some swimmers (which is my favourite sport) swim up to 75 miles a week in training.
Harmonica playing I understand is now promoted by many doctors for the elderly as a means to improve their health. I think many young people who hear nursing home harmonica playing would probably shun the harmonica. But I digress. What I am saying is that one needs to be fit & determined to cope with the amount of practice needed to achieve their level. I swim 2000m or 1+ mile 4 times a week and walk 10ks(6 miles) on alternate days. I practice harp anything upwards of 1 hour to 3 hours a day. Fortunately I am retired and have plenty of time. I will shortly turn 68 but for my age I am no where near competive with others my age in my sport or in harp playing. What do you do?

I'm in marching band. A heck of a lot harder than most would think- right now I'm in summer band camp, which is 1 to 9 pm (with a hour and a half dinner break). We run, do push ups, do bear crawls, march, jazz walk, jazz run, with the latter three while playing instruments, and blast our lungs out. These are some exhausting days.

I run at least 6 kilometers a day, when not studing for exams (law student). Jiu-Jitsu once or twice a week.
Half an hour of harmonica time before going to sleep.
that's what keeps me going for now. (-:

I work hard as an electrician--try to watch my diet and stay vegetarian--and, whenever I get the urge to go run a mile or two, I walk my dogs and clean my harps!

Now and then I think about doing more--but, I get tired thinking like that. ;)

Yesterday I just did a 5K I was training for since Jan. A friend got married, and she and her new husband met in a running club, so they had a 5K the morning of their wedding. The top 3 female finishers got to be bridesmaids! I lost ten pounds training for it, and another ten doing a huge project this summer in my backyard. I'm thinking of trying to do a marathon next year so I can say I did one.

The harmonica has been my transition away from a more sports oriented life. My day job has me seated most of the day as I am an IT application analyst. But in my twenties I was a competitive body builder and then raced Motocross for 3 1/2 years. Up until two years ago I played the previous 18 yrs. in an old man's hardball league including a tournament in Phoenix for 14 yrs. where the last few years there was over 350 teams from as many as 6 different countries. I was a pitcher and third baseman. Unfortunately 4 degenerated discs in my back and the need to have both hips replaced has made my life much more sedate these last two years. Now I spend my spare time (limited due to a long commute) trying to learn the harmonica. I've been taking voice lessons, too and my teacher wants me to make a CD, but I would like to gain skills on the harp before I make that effort. Right now I get my exercise from lifting small beverage receptacles filled with alcoholic libations as well as puffing on Nicaraguan cigars. I've been playing the harmonica for 11 months and am in love with it and have great things to say about the Gussow learning products.
