I was just wondering what the scientific explanation for harmonica reeds failing so suddenly. I can understand a harp that has all kinds of gunk and rust inside from years of use, but after taking apart my brand new Seydel Soloist Pro and checking out the offending four draw reed (it will not even make a sound, much less a flat note). There doesn't APPEAR to be any thing wrong with it. It seems like they always go out (mostly flat) without warning and sometimes with barely any use.....

Exact same thing happened to me with a Solist Pro 4 months back! 4draw went flat within a week! Couldn't believe it. I'm sticking with MBs...grumble grumble...

I think it has something to do with the reed getting a crack in them that can't be seen with the human eye. ---------- "Without music, life would be a mistake" -Nietzsche

I got a brand new natural E minor LO the other day--and the 2 draw was terrible! I thought at first I was suffering from a regression in ability--this is a usual complaint of rank beginners--but I tried all my other harps and the 2 draw was fine on them.
So I took it apart and gapped it about three times to get it right. Now it plays fine--so I have a Minor harp that plays well and I can use it to remove excess beard hairs if I happen to lose my tweezers.
Damn! I wish somebody would make a really good JI tuned harp in all keys that wouldn't cost over a hundred bucks a shot! Buying a new harp is too much like voting for a president--just try to decide who is the lesser "A" hole!
