My wife totally surprised me yesterday with a Shure 520d mic. It really screams--it's definitely the best mic for harp I have ever tried--but that ain't saying much--because I've only tried about 4 different mics.
But it doesn't have a volume knob!
Can anybody lead me in the direction of some instructions that will tell me a) what kind of potentiometer to buy and b) a diagram of how to wire it in. I could probably figure out b--if I knew the answer to a...any input here would be appreciated--I've already done my standard googles and such--but I'm not coming up with anything useful yet. . .thanks!

I don't know about all that other stuff, but as for your wife: Keep Her! Buy her flowers! Write songs of love in her honor. You probably know that!

Do you really want to take the microphone apart and add volume control yourself?
Otherwise have a look at these off-the-shelf in-line volume controls:

There certainly are other manufacturers.

Thank you for the input. . .I am definitely keeping my wife of 38 years for at least another season. . .I found just the info I needed on the link provided by bdr. . .and I have ordered the parts to do the job. . .I'll let you know how it goes.

I finished the project on my green bullet today. I'd still be out there playing but my wife was getting upset--don't wanna do that in case she shows up with some old tube amp next!
Anyway, I took out the fixed cord and installed a 1/4 inch phone jack and a claristat volume knob. It works great--for some reason I can now open up all the stops on my little Hog 30 and not torque out on feedback. Then I just control the volume with the knob on the mic--can't wait to try it in a jamming situation. . .

glad to hear it went so well! I've got a new mic on the way and just picked up a vintage element that I plan to install and maybe a volume pot as weel. I would be interested in seeing pics of yours if you've got any...
also thinking about building an amp. I have a work colleague who repairs amps in his spare time and he insists that putting new components in old amps kills the unique sound characteristics because the new components are simply too good compared with 20 years ago or more. So I plan to build out of 2nd hand or vintage components and house it in something that is not your typical speaker cabinet too, I'm interested to see how it all works out.

Hi Bdr--
I put a couple of pics of my green bullet on a site that I have been planning to build: http://oldwailer.com/
You'll notice the volume knob is up on the side, instead of on the bottom back of the bullet--that's because I couldn't fit the components in that way without doing a lot of grinding away on the case--which I didn't want to try.
The knob in this position works out quite well, though--I can turn the volume up or down with the edge of my right hand, without opening the cup of my hands much at all.
The white spot is where the cord used to go--I just filled it in with a bit of caulking--I'll get my wife to match the color with her acrylic paints & touch that up.
Building an amp out of vintage parts sounds intriguing, but I wouldn't have the balls to tackle that one--I think finding the parts might take a lot of time--in addition to the complexity of wiring it together. I wish you lots of luck with it though--we'll all expect pics and a report on how it went when you finish it. . .

That looks like a very neat job, well done. I plan to use the 'keep it simple stupid' method and maybe pick up an old amp that doesn't work and refurb it. plenty of diy kits available on line but out of my price range I'm afraid. let you know how I get on cheers Bdr
