Anyone have any ideas on how to get into a marine band? Ive tried using a small knife with a thin blade but it just scratches the cover plates. Ive watched Adams video on how he gets into them but the nails on mine seem flush with the harp. I cant seem to get a knife edge under the nail to get the damn thing open. Any magic ideas out there? (the 3 draw needs a bit of TLC)

instead of trying to get under the head, how about getting under the cover plate and slowly working the knife blade towards the nail?

now if you are really industrious, replace the nails with screws.

i am not mechanically inclined.
go to a hardware store with your drill bits or the screws you want to use. let the professional help you match up screw and drill size.
(i would think 1/2" is tooooo big!)

Nails....I damn thee! Here's a funny story. When i first became brave enough to take my first Harmonica apart i had just watched Adam's video where he teaches you to open up a Marine Band; BUT I at the time was so Ignorant I tried this technique on a Harp that didn't use nails!! HA HA, you should have seen the results! Luckily it was only like a $5 harmonica. Really though, hohner should release a Marine Band that is Classic but with Screws instead of the "DAMN Nails" that doesn't cost $60. How about $35? I'd pay that extra 5 bucks to be rid of those Nailys. ---------- $Daddy Rich$ "The Blues is Ok!"

I use 2-56 size screws, which take a 1/8 drill bit if you want full clearance (ie the bolt slips in), or 3.64th inch drill bit if you are going to tap the hole (ie. so the bolt screws in). In general, you drill wide holes for the coverplate bolts because you will use nuts on the bottom (tip: leave the back two coverplate nails in place on both sides of the harp, and drill the coverplate bolt-holes where the front nails were) and for the top reedplates, and use the smaller tapped holes for the bottom reedplate. Alternatively, you can make them all large holes, and use nuts on all of them. To get all the reedplate holes lined up right, first drill the holes for the coverplates following my tip above. then wedge the knife under the reedplates,a nd slowly pry them up. Get rid of all the nails. Now, put the plates back on the comb and temporarily hold them in place with the coverplate bolts. Drill from the top (blow) side into three of the old nail holes along the back edge of the reedplate (you'll only really need three bolts). If you are going to tap the bottom reedplate to accept the screws directly, then use a 3/64th bit, dissassemble the harp, and re-drill the top (blow) plate with a 1/8th inch bit. Otherwise, if you are going to use nuts, just use the 1/8" in the first place. Drilling it this way (with the harp temporarily held together by the pre-drilled coverplate bolts), all you holes will align properly,a nd you will save yourself untold frustration and filing out of badly aligned holes! Trust me, I know! ---------- ------------------
