Ive just recieved my new Marine band deluxe in the post. It plays great but when i play fairly hard it sounds like the reeds on the 1 and 2 hole draw are hitting the cover plate. It makes a rattling type of noise. I was wondering if this is possible and if its just a case of adjusting the gap of the reeds? Ive opened the harp and theres no obvious signs that there is something wrong. Can anyone help?

I assume it's a low key harp A or G? Lee Oskar cured the problem by making the lower cover plate extra deep on the lower keys but it does make for quite a big mouthfull. I don't think adjusting the gaps would make any difference but I don't know how you could cure this apart from not letting rip quite so loudly. Hopefully someone will come along and advise you better?

I had this problem on 2 mb deluxes an A and a C. I broke them in slowly, then after 2 weeks they played up. I took them apart and gapped tuned them (as best I can) and I noticed when Held up to the light that the reed wasn't centered in it's slot on the A harp. So used a shim to center it. Worked fine. Took the C apart and the reed was centered. Gapped and tuned it. Put it back together and the rattle had gone? they both still play good after 6 months with no sign of a rattle. Dont give up on these babies yet

The same thing happens on my low-F harp, when I hit the 1-hole draw hard.
BTW: I am not overly impressed with the MB Deluxe. I think I'll stick with the regular MB, make the modifications myself and save some cash.

My marine band deluxe is in the key of C. i did have the same problem with a low G on a special 20 but binned that beacuse of very poor production. To be honest i recently bought a regular marine band in Bb, the 3 draw was a bit sticky, i bent the reeds slightly with a piece of paper and it plays great. Might just stick to those now.

If i try and gap it to see if it makes a difference, is it just a matter of making the gap slightly smaller? I dont want to ruin the harp either. Its definatly the 2 hole draw thats the culpret.

I simply take the cover plates off and using a pair of needle nose pliers bend the plates up a bit at the lower end - its usually the 1 and 2 draw that rattle. Just bend enough to not rattle but not so much so as to no longer seal well - ie bend at the exposed/open end but not along the side that sits on the reedplate and not at the front end where your mouth goes.

Sorry to be a pain ,but you mean near the open end (where the M is on the marine band deluxe and just by where the guys head is on a regular marine band cover plate)near where the cover plate flairs out like a trumpet?

I bought a Golden Melody with the same problem. Key of G. I called Hohner and they let me send it in to have it looked at. They fixed it free of charge. I paid shipping which was only 6 bucks.
