Hi guys!

I need a few tips from the Gussow-community on a subject..

My girlfriend has started to play piano again after many years without playing. She used to play classic music but she's now going to an instructor who's a big blues fan and she want to learn some blues-pianio stuff that goes well with my harping. I have to say that I'm not all that into the harp/piano-combo. So I was just wondering if you guys could give me some tips on some good harp/piano stuff that we could learn from.

Muddy Waters always had good pianists and harpists, so basically anything of his would be great to listen to, although I don't think I've ever heard a song with only harp and piano.

Here's a couple of piano tunes that have a little harp in them:

Hi guys!

Patrick: I've heard most of Muddys songs and I agree. Great piano and harp-playing but I'm not looking for a band. Because it's just me and my girlfriend.. I know a lot of bluesmusic but until she started to play piano again,I never really gave much thought to harp/piano-stuff:)

Gene: you are right on! That's the stuff I'm looking for! Seems like I've got a new world to explore here:)

You're welcome. I'm glad (and surprised) that I could help. Did you like one of the You Tube things or the boogie woogie idea?

Both actually! I've been playing for a year and a half now but I've never really put much focus on harp/piano-duo's. That's about to change:)

On a related topic, I'm going on my holidays to Tunisia in a week and there is a piano bar in my hotel. OF COURSE when I heard this I will be packing a couple of harps to jam! Anyone know what keys boogie woogie pianists like to play in?

Cheers

eharp, You beat me to it: Rod Piazza and Honey! Nothing better. I have some great pic's of both, and one of myself and Miss BeHavin' herself!

Check out other stuff with Memphis Slim with various harpcats, and the same with Leroy Carr.

I did some stuff with Barrelhouse Chuck, but was not recorded.

Go to www.learntoplaymusic.com and type in "blues piano". There are two instructional books/cds available.

The "Progressive Blues Piano" book/cd teaches notes, techniques, soloing, improv, and accompaniment.

I have used the "Progressive Guitar Method" book/cd/dvd with my 11 year old son per the advice of his guitar teacher.

A great blues harmonica/piano song, and one of my personal favorites is

Charlie Musselwhite: Christoredempto

Definetely check that one out.

Also, I just realized the piano could pretty easily play a guitar and bass part. In G the bass part could be played in the left hand (I chord: G B D E F E D B IV: C E G A Bb A G E C V: D F# A B C B A F# D) and a shuffle in the right (G&D G&E G&F G&E G&D etc. with the changes). It'd basically be like having a bass player and a guitar player to back you up.

My mother-in-law was pretty keen to have a jam with me once when she was staying with us. She got a bit disappointed coz our piano wasn't a "concert pitch" piano she called it. My marine bands were in A440 tuning and the piano was in something else. I just took her word for it but it might be something to be aware of. I'd just assumed all pianos were the same.

mr sog: I know absolutely nothing about this myself.. I also thought all pianos were the same.. We have an old and cheap piano that is a bit out of tune on some notes, but hey, isn't that what the blues is all about? Making the best you can with what you have? :)

Anybody else who knows something about this?

too true!

She told me you can get the cheapies tuned to 440 but they don't hold the tuning for long. Something like that anyway. Maybe someone else on this forum has a better understanding.

Anyway, by the time your pianos gone out of tune and you've blown out a few reeds on the harp it might all come together in one perfect blues moment. Like Jack Black you would have created the greatest blues song in the world (or perhaps only a tribute)
