So I'm facing kind of a dichotomy here. I'm starting to play the harmonica, previously having already fallen in love with blues and jazz. So now I'm up to buy my very first harmonica, but I can't really decide whether to get a chromatic harmonica of 48 voices in C or a diatonic harmonica in C. Some told me that the chromatic is my best choice because I have way more possible notes, yet I don't know what to think.
What do you think?

For Blues, most prefer a diatonic. Jazz can be either or. That said, diatonic is good place to start and then afterwards you can add the chromatic. It doesn't have to be a "either or", it can be a "And Both".

Both are fine. Start with a Diatonic in key of c and easist to play for beginners is either a Hohner SP20, Suzuki Bluesmaster or Lee Oskar(major diatonic). All are fine harps and are easy on the lips as they have plastic combs. When you find you are becoming proficient as a player you should look to investing in a good Chromatic like a Suzuki SCX or Hohner CX. Its an interesting - never ending argument ie choice of Harp ie its very personal. A superb harp player like Howard Levy can make do with one diatonic in the key of c, play it chromatically ie get all the notes that are normally only on a chrom by using overblow, plus play it in all keys. Us mere mortals have to struggle with numerous diatonics in every key plus a few chroms.
