Hello all,

I've been playing the harp for a little over a year now and I'm just now beginning to feel confident enough to go to a local blues jam session. The sessions I've been to have gone great, everyone being impressed by my Gussow-stolen tricks. But there's something I'm still in the dark about: how does one effectively accompany a guitarist when the guitarist is taking a solo? Besides an occasional "chuck-chuck" I don't know what quite to do. I don't remember seeing any of Adam's lessons on youtube that talked about accompaniment (and a search didn't bring up one), but perhaps I'm just blind.

So question: how do you guys and gals accompany other players in a jam session environment? Is it all chordal stuff? Some warbling? Any particular tracks you would recommend that show off some fine accompaniment?

letting him have his solo makes for a happy guitarist, when you get your solo you feel the same

Corky Siegel on "CHICAGO BLUES REUNION Buried Alive In The Blues" (cd/dvd) excellent samples of when to step to the front, play on the side, or hang back alltogether.... and of course most of Muddy's songs that include harp.....Junior Wells and Buddy Guy (together) are also a good example..

btw CBR has also lots of great music, interviews and background stories that make you wanna go back to it every time...

So I should stay utterly silent while the other seven people each take their turn? Who knew the answer would be that simple? Someone should go tell Little Walter that. The man's been playing the wrong way all these years! And man, how does Adam Gussow have the gall to play along while Mr. Satan is playing? On the CDs Adam should be waiting quietly until Satan completely stops, then it would be his turn. The nerve of some people...

No disrespect, just having fun. ;]

Dutchbones,

I will have to check out CBR. It certainly sounds interesting! And I greatly admire Muddy's harp players, even though my ear isn't trained enough to fully distinguish what they're doing. Back to the woodshed, I guess. :]

I think that it is good to just work the cord changes like standard backup music when someone is taking a solo.

Just play softly and don't get to happy.

There is a Barrett book/CD on this very subject--not yet released--but I've been waiting for it. . .
