I have had an awful cold the last week, my nose completely blocked up. That hasn't stopped me practicing of course!
I've noticed a 'strange' thing. With my snotty nose I find I get a nicer tone on the lower draws (especially 2 and 3), and bending these notes is much easier.
Now I have read about how it is important to keep an airtight nasal passage when bending notes so I guess this explains it, but what I want to know is if there is a way of replicating the effect without the accompnying cold! Perhaps some excercise to train keeping the nose blocked or something like that?
Anyone have any simalar experiances of playing with a cold?

Yes indeed, Oliver, I have been experimenting with a nose clip (as used by some swimmers) and it gives a nice tone and makes bending easier!

hehe, I was waiting for somone to suggest a clothes peg!
The swimmers clip seems like a better idea. All very well in the privacy of your own home (or woodshed) but I'm not sure I'd be seen wearing one in public...

I find it to be refreshing, from time to time, even while playing, to breathe with my nose. Sometimes I even get rid of extra air through that orifice. ;)
I think it was Jon Gindick, somewhere, who had a lesson on "Sniffing the nose closed" while drawing. This involves closing the nose as much as possible and giving a little quick sniff to suck it shut. This tip worked for me at one time.
After you get more used to bending, it seems to involve the throat and jaw more--I'm not aware of putting any attention on closing my nostrils any more. . .

Try raming a big fat french fry up each nostril it will assist the bending and you'll allways have a snack handy when you're done
