I was digging through some of my older stuff the other day, and came across my Aerosmith blues album "Honkin on Bobo." I was reading the liner notes, and discovered ALL the harmonica was played by Steven Tyler. I bought this album when it first came out, wich was before I got into harp, so I didn't remember just how much harp playing was on it. Now I know he is a decent "harmonica" player, but I'd never categorized him as a "blues harp" player, if that makes sense. I was pleasantly surprised at his licks and riffs on this album. Nothing fancy, no over the top solos, but just good old fashion fills and accompanyment. He is definetely a better blues harp player than I originally gave him credit.
Anybody else have this album? What do you guys think of Mr. Tyler's playing?

I've always liked his playing: especially when they did MTV Unplugged.

I have the CD titled Honkin' On Bobo by Aerosmith. I like it, but have to be in a Blues rock kind of mood. It definitely is great road trip music. I saw Aerosmith live a couple of times in the 1970's and am still a bit of a fan even though I don't listen to rock much at all. As for this disc I'd say it is well worth owning and listening to frequently.

If you like Steven Tyler's harp playing on "Honkin' On Bobo", then you should check out the song "Hangman Jury" on the album "Permanent Vacation" and the infamous song "Big Ten Inch Record" on "Toys In The Attic" (which happens to be the first album I ever bought).
I think Tyler's playing is not bad, especially when you compare him to other rock muscians. He is no Magic Dick, but he does have a bluesy rock sound to his playing.
I believe Hohner has a Steven Tyler Signature Harp available for sale. It doesn't cost as much as Bob Dylan's (THANK GOD!), which is funny because I consider Steven Tyler a better harp player than Dylan. Oh, by the way, the Steven Tyler Signature harp is new...not a used one!

I love Steven's playing, always have. I realize that all the blues harmonica purists won't think much of him, but as far as rocker front men/ harp players go, he's among my favorites. Love his tone and rhythm.
On you tube check out:
Hangman Jury One Way Street Milk Cow Blues
All from the MTV unplugged sessions.
And especially the live version (I think from SNL) of Big Ten Inch Record where Steven mixes in a little sleight of hand trick and a very short solo at the beginning.
Oh and Blind Melon's right about the Hohner Tyler signature model. Saw it in a guitar center flyer that was mailed to me. I believe it's in A. Didn't buy one though, figured you were just paying for his name etched on it. Rather add to my collection of Special 20s and Marine Bands
