I'm a new to the forum. Has anyone tried this amp or have any reviews on it? It lists for $249.00.

I play in a band that is rather loud so I guess I would run it through the PA system and use it as a stage monitor? (if I can hear it) or perhaps follow Adam's suggestion in his YouTube video (#1 or 2 - can't remember) about splitting between a smaller amp 5W and a bigger one.

Thanks and what a great forum!

The specs are listed below:

Built by Hohner expressly to meet the unique needs of the harp player.

The Hoodoo Box is a 5-watt, Class-A, hand-wired tube amp combo designed especially for harmonica players. Built from the ground up to produce the fat, distorted tones that are the cornerstone of the electric blues harp sound, it is equipped with a single EL84 power tube and a 12 AX7 plus 12 AU7 tube complement in the preamp stage. Its classic spring reverb will add drama and air to your performances while the Celestion Super 8 8" speaker is especially suited to reproduce the entire range of harp tones. The XLR direct output can be used for recording or as a send to the front of house PA.

The Tone control helps you dial in the right sound with a range that goes from Dark to Bright to Scooped, the latter setting giving you a flat-out, heavily distorted sound. The Hoodoo Box will bring out the best in your harp technique as well as your mics.

The roadworthy Hoodoo Box cabinet features classic styling with rugged Tolex covering, white piping and special Hohner grille cosmetics.

From growls and soulful wailing to dynamic virtuosity, the Hoodoo Box will bring these sounds and more to your harmonica playing.

Here are some recommendations for small amps given by one of the greatist harmonica players in China--Bluesimon.

1.Fender Blues Jr. NOS Lacquer Tweed Guitar Combo Amp
2.Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue 40W 1x12" Combo Amp
3.Fender Blues Junior Combo Amp
4.HARPGEAR 2
5.LANEY LC15/VC15
6.Johnson Loredo T25R Tube Guitar Amp
7.BIYANG OnesTube 2203
8.CARVIN VINTAGE 16
9.Ibanez ValBee

i personly think that these small amps are perfect for home practise or even for some parties. but larger ones are of course better for larger shows.

If the band is too loud for you to hear your small amp miced to the pa as a monitor, then insist to the band leader that they all turn that volume down a bit.
Don't back down because if they do not turn down:
1. You will be frustrated because you can't hear what you are playing
2. It will cost you money because you will blow and draw harder & harder and reeds will go
3. If you pick up the wrong key harp on stage by mistake you won't hear it and then you finish and someone tells you after - embarrassing!
Trust me I have experience of this issue on an ongoing basis..

This can be addressed at the all-important sound check, half an hour before the 1st set.
Make sure you can hear the harmonica then.
Appoint a friend in the audience to tell you if they can hear you properly in solo and laidback modes.
Above all tell the band members if you can't hear your little amp. Remember guitarists are notorious for tweaking the vol knob and the small amps give the best sound (I have fender blues junior)
