Last night I left my chromatic harmonica in my cold car (40'F). Does anyone know if that's bad for it? I've left my diatonics in some pretty extreme conditions, but chroms seem so much more sensitive somehow.

Heat expands things, loosens up molecules and makes them unstable.

I'm assuming cold temp does the exact opposite. I could be way wrong though as I don't know jack about this scientific stuff.

But if your reeds seem more responsive then maybe the cold really did tighten things up a bit. Though I think subjecting your harps to constant violent temperature changes might end up cracking or fracturing your harps.

Not entirely certain though.

That's kinda what I was thinkin'. By the way, sorry about the crack I made about having too much time on your hands. It's rather ironic coming from a guy who can't drag himself away from this virtual Athens of harmonica discussion. Seriously, I'm addicted!

I'm so addicted too. Yeah it feels like a symposium doesn't it?

On a similiar note I've always thought of Adam as a modern day Socrates (or Plato or Aristotle) of the Blues and Harp. He has that element about him don't you think? He certainly does promote each of us to develop our own opinons, conclusions, and styles of playing. And ultimately given us a harp enthusiast haven. :)

Zihn and SBIII,

If you like the philosophical side of Dr. Gussow, Check out the lesson he put up on "Help Me." There are some comments near the end of the lesson that are really great! It's also my all-time favorite lesson, but I always say that when I'm still trying to master them. . .

I've read that you shouldn't play your harmonica in cold temperatures because the reeds are brittle and could break.

I'll bet Adam is saying : " Aw Gee Whiz ! "

One of the nicest things about Adam is that he's A Regular Man. He has personaly answered any query I ever sent him.
While certainly EXPERT on blues harp I don't think there's a pretentious bone in his body .

I don't think he is looking for SAINTHOOD

Well, lets see, we gotta think up three verifiable miracles to get Adam canonized a saint ("Our Man of the Harp" would be a great name, don't you think)?

There might be some other requirements too--my Catholicism is a little rusty (my wife would kill me for that--she's the Catholic--I'm just a Mormon apostate).

OK--tonight I'll pray to St. Gussow the Blue for the ability to overblow--if it comes in the next day or two--we'll have the first miracle!

Somebody else will have to come up with the other two--I expect praying to make me tired. . .

The question Sonny Boy 111 asked was in reference to extreme temps on his chromatic. With a chrom you need to warm them up so that moisture from your breath doesn't cause the windsavers to stick and pop.

Slight technical hitch on the canonisation front Oldwailer, has he not got to be dead for some inordinate amount of time before being made a Saint. Not sure Adam will be keen on that, but it may help in his research about the devil! Not that I am a catholic and not an expert on these things.

With regards to the extreme conditions, I left an instrument in my car for a couple of years for general use when I was out. There were no problems except when cold when it played out of tune until it had warmed up and then was fine and back in tune.

Rustywater-- picky, picky! I didn't pull off the overblow either--guess we'll just all have to agree that Adam is a really great guy and leave it at that--also he's a great harp player. . .

I think diatonics are pretty tough and can go through most weather conditions. As for chromatics, I think I've heard things about the windsaver valve thing (not sure exactly what its called) coming off in extreme heat. I'm not sure though.

I agree wholeheartedly oldwailer Adam certainly has made a great difference to mine and many others harp playing I'm sure.

I think the biggest thing for me is his attitude and enthusiasm for the instrument, it cannot fail to rub off and inspire.

Up until I found this web site I never knew anyone who played or admitted to playing the harp, I was beginning to think that every player was a closet player, hard to explain without a beer or two inside me!!

I know its nothing to do with this thread but thumbs up to the fella and sod the miracles, make him a Saint anyway, now back to the over blows!!!
