I'm currently in the market for a digital recorder and am considering either an Olympus WS300M or Line 6 BackTrack from Musicians Friend. The price for both is about $100 and mic with the BackTrack is an extra $50.

Does anyone out there have experience with either of these?

Thx

I have the Olympus WS-311-M digital recorder. It is a great tool to learn with. I can record a riff, a tune, or a lesson on it on the fly--then take it with me and study it while driving--while on break at work--or whatever.

If I use the earbuds with it, the sound is good to jam with.

These modern conveniences just make learning music too easy for you whippersnappers--back in the day, we had to get the music off 78 records--and we were thankful to get them! ;)

Have a Sony TCM-200DV casette recorder size of a walkman about £25.00. You can flick a switch and playback at a much much lower speed so you can hear all the note changes. Wouldn't be without it when learning some complicated riffs.
Oh! and the mic is built in and it has a really good quality speaker too for the price.

I have an Olympus WM-320M and use mine in much the same way as Oldwailer.

There are a couple of things I find especially handy. The first is a built in speaker, you don't have to use earphones. The other is the option of a slow playback at same pitch.

I see the Olympus as a neat musical notebook that I can link in with my computer.

Sorry Tookatooka, I meant to add to my message above and should have read.

The 320M sounds like it might be a better one than my 311M--the speaker is so small in mine it's pretty hard to really jam with.

Still, I really like it--it's my musical notebook on the go and it fits in my harp case in one harp slot.

Oldwailer, the speaker in the Olympus WS-320M is still very tiny and not loud enough to jam with.

With the internal speaker I use it as a 'memory jogger' as to how a tune starts. Or, to listen through a riff before I try it.

If I want to jam along, I'll connect the Olympus to my amp.

It also works well to connect to your computer speakers. . .or pick up a set of them from a garage sale for about $2. . .
