I just took a look at those loopers at Musicians Friend--I'm afraid if I get one of those and a good amp I'll spend so much time learning to use these gizmos I won't have any time for the woodshed.
Wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy a good guitarist? I think they're almost as cheap as trombone players these days. . .
(Just kidding--the machine looks fun--I just can't quite imagine what I would do with it).

Don't bother with machines
As wailer says there are loads of guitarists at open mics. Just get good enough to enhance their songs and get the key they are playing in before you jump up.
I have a lot of success with the crowd at open mics playing on my own. Get hold of Lee Oskar harmonic minor (yellow Label) and experiment & improvise playing single note melodys and riffs fast or slow. You will hear it sounds very east european or russian, then when you go on stage call your piece 'a Serbian love song'
If you can pull it off the crowd will love it (especially women - but I'm too old for that!!)

Great idea, Nick--I have a couple of natural minor LO's that I love for the minor stuff--never thought to try a harmonic minor, but I'll get one as soon as I can.
What's the best key?
I kind of like being "too old for that," but I don't really mind an occasional attack. . .

Lot's to be learned from Son of Dave. That's what I am shooting for but I also am going to back myself with guitar. Lots of practice to do. Thanks Juke Luke for the link. Do you have a loop satation?

Oldwailer I have a couple of Lee Oskar Harmonic Minors in keys Gm & Am. Love playing them. They are different. Have a look at this guy playing one. http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=RLCNesboqK

Ausiesucker--that link lead me to some pretty strange stuff--but no harp players.
The earlier link--to the one man with slap back--that was some great stuff--how does he do that?

Wailer, get a C & G Harmonic minor then stick the C between thumb and forefinger as normal, then put the G between forefinger and middle finger!! Cup the right hand as normal. It sounds funny but it works...you then play single note melodies between the two and you get a great contrast - sort of a chromatonic diatonic. Oh and don't show the two when you get up at the open mic, let them work it out for themselves. Link is a short vid of my playing Screamin by Paul Butterfield Key of F (harp in Bb) You see I'm old!

OK, Aussie--I now have to buy some more harps--that clip is way cool--a change of pace from the blues stuff--and very cool.
Nick--I liked your clip very much--but it was too short!

I used to have a "Boomerrang" which I used to loop guitar and jam over. You might want to check them out. I remember that most people prefer them over the Boss products. Might be more $$ tho. -Ryan

Wow, just checked out that "Son of Dave" link. Maybe I need to get another boomerrang (or Boss) pedal!... I used to mess around (kind of) like that. Never really thought anyone would think twice about listening to it. I guess I was wrong. I'll have to check out one of his CD's. -Ryan

No I dont have a loop station but I do love Son of Dave. I dont know what loop station he uses but I know it has been modified in some way. When I used to play guitar, I used to use tap delay (where you press the pedal, then play then press again to loop it) and if you didn't get it spot on, then it sounded slightly out of time and awful. Might take alot of practise but like Son of Dave you can have a great one man show.
