I bought one about a month ago, and I must say that it is the best out of the box harmonica that I have ever used.
First of all, the wood comb is so well sealed, it almost seems like plastic. It is very smoth and very comfortable. It sounds wonderfull. Very full and rich and loud. Louder than most of my other harmonicas.
It has stainless steel reeds which I do believe last a lot longer than brass. Replacement reed plates cost about $60 but you will probably only have to replace reeds once a year at the very most.
They play very well, much better than a any of hohners models.
I don't know if you read the thread on this fourm "Congratulations Brandon Bailey" but this is the harmonica that I used to win the competition.
It sounds almot like a marine band but easier to play.
It really is the best out of the box harmonica.
My only quip with it is that it is so expensive. If it was mabye $50, I would buy more of them. But at $95 a harp, I would be sent to the poor house if I bought a lot more of them. ( But at least I would be playing some pretty fine instruments in the poor house :)

Brandon:
If you'd like, I can contact the folks at Seydel--I was just over there in September--and see if they might be interested, now or later, in signing you on as an official endorser. Endorsers get free harps. (They might want to wait until you roll out that "essential new blues harmonica CD" that you're going to record at Ardent Studios.) One never knows. Remember: L.D. Miller endorses Seydel harps. He's a youngster next to you.

On the same theme has anyone tried the new Suzuki Fabulous Diatonics? It appears that they slot into the same high end quality market as the Seydel 1847? On the Suzuki website they quote a price of $270 which is way beyond what I would ever want to pay. I have a few Suzuki Promasters which I find are a quantum leap up from SP20s, Bluesmasters & LOs. Its hard to imagine at the price for these new harps that they can be so much better than a Promaster at $40? The Fabulous are reviewed on:- http://www.brendan-power.com/ http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=RmLxzCBVu_A

I saw the fabulous harmonicas on sale from a german website, but i think it was at a lower price than what you mentioned.
I think suzuki should just do a long reed version of the promaster or the fire breath. If I had the choice I wouldn't want to pay the extra money for the silver plates cover plates.

I'm in the same "yikes.. $90?!" boat regarding the 1847, but I have to say that the Blues Soloist Pro is pretty amazing and goes for about $40. The finish and the unique shape (and size) of the holes make the com almost as smooth and easy to play as plastic, and the sound is fantastic. It also just plain old feels nice to hold -- it's solid and very well made. I got an A to try out and just put in another order for a C and a Bb.
I also recently picked up one of their little "Big Six" harps just to try out the stainless steel reeds without springing for the 1847... that thing is GREAT! The quality and finish are flawless and, again, the sound is absolutely fantastic. It's really nice 'cause it's the same size as a 10-hole, just a little shorter (unlike the cute, but useless Hohner "Mini" which you could accidentally/easily swallow!). Anybody who doesn't have a Seydel Big Six should definitely get one!
SO, based on my experience with those two, the 1847 is on my wish list, but I'm hoping to maybe get it from Santa.
