I have a cheap valve amp (chinese epiphone valve special).
I have read in places that you need to leave them for around half an hour to warm up on start-up. Mine seems to start amplifying after anly a few seconds or so. Where does the half hour theory come from? Does it only really start crunching after they are fully warmed up or does it harm the valves if you push them too early? Perhaps I have been misinformed?

As an ex electronics engineer the valves only need a few seconds to warm up. They have a small filament not unlike an electric light bulb which needs to fire up. The performance of the amp shouldn't really change over a period of time unless of course it has been fiendishly designed to do so, but I wouldn't have thought so.
