Hey guys. I am looking for a budget amplifier for this coming festive season. My price range is £130 and below. Thats about $205 and below. I've seen 'harpsucker' play on a Fender Champion 600 which is resonably priced at £105. However if there is any others that you guys think are great please point them out! Thanks

Hi Clarky , i do own a fender champ600,i giged with it and it performed very well. You might want to have a look to the blackheart little giant .I wanted one but couldn't wait to get an amp so i went for the fender .The blackheart is a 5 watt tube amp that you can switch to 3 watt,it has a custom made 12 inch eminence speaker and tone control too ( the fender does'nt have it ). This is definetly an amp you want to consider.

Hi Clarky3009,

It depends on what you want the amp for.
Is it for recording at home, playing at small med gigs jams etc or to work on you amplified tone?

Do you want solid state or class A tube etc

Are you in the UK?
you may want to look at 5 to 15w range of which there are lots to choose from.

It just so happens that I have an epiphone junior for sale

5W class A tube amp new used once to test it with my mics.

Bought a fender bassman 59 now so dont need this one.

Yours for £85 plus postage UK only

Russ

go to epiphone web sites and have a look at the review or ask the others what they think of it. Like I said it depends on what you are going to do with it.

I own a Fender Champion 600 ... I can't say much about using it for harp since I haven't done that yet (still need a mic).
For guitar I love it. Classic Fender sound but be prepared to mess around with it a bit. Get rid of the stock tubes and put in something good. Some people change out the speakers for a better sound and others find the stock speaker is fine but you need to break it in. Some people complain of too much hum ... personally I don't listen to my amp in a quiet room .. I didn't buy it to turn it up to 12 and listen to nothing. It is what it is ... an afordable amp that you can mess around with and keep your neighbours happy without calling the cops on you.

What about this baby.

http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_ga15.htm

Have read some reviews on harmony central and others about it. All seem positive about it. Might need a few tweeks for Harp (valve changes etc) but looks great value at £121.

I've asked the missus to get me one for christmas. I'll let you know what it's like if we're still together by then!

I'd go for the gretsch 5222. It's a champ 600 in a nicer package. I'd then buy a mod kit from alnicomagnet on ebay which gets rid of the hum and bypasses the fixed tone stack which is supposed to make it sound vintage and louder, also adds a standby switch.. I'd then buy some good tubes and finally i'd stick a weber sig 8 alnico in there. Should sound great

Those are great mods but you end up spending twice as much as budgeted for the amp by the time you are done.

I've got a champ 600. The chinese tubes went after 4months. So i bought new tubes and the mod kit from alnicomagnet and some nos tubes. What a difference. No hum. 25 per cent louder. 50 per cent warmer. It's like a totally different amp. The speaker get a bit farty at higher volumes. And i cant believe how loud this little amp is. I'd recommend one anyday. Even without the mods i'd recommend one. But dont in putting expensive tubes in there until you get a standby switch on it

Great comments thank you, fender 600 sounds pretty good if i replace the tubes.

Oxharp, your amp is sounding pretty fine, dude send me a email with more details at alexander.the.great@sky.com

I live in UK.

I want the amp to, practice in the woodshed, but also, (if its good enough) to play at some gigs. E-mail me man,
