I have been playing for about 6 months now and I was thinking about getting a few lessons (probably through skype).

I was just wondering what everyone's thoughts were on getting lessons (either face to face or over the phone).

I am interested in other people experiance with them, how beneficial are they, are they worth the money?

I am also interested in people's thoughts opn when the best time to have lessons are, at the very start or after you have been playing for a while.

There are a few different people who give lessons through skype, does anyone have any reccomendations of who to choose?

Hi Belfast Harper,

You wont find the answers you are probably looking for from lessons. There are loads of other ways to get better.

Drop me an email and I will give you my phone number.
this is much easier to talk about over the phone or on skype if you prefer.

email is russ.turner@ntlworld.com

Belfast harper,
I'd been messing around on the harp for about ten years before I decided to really knuckle down and start learning. My missus encoraged me to get lessons and I was very lucky to find a great guy called Adam Norton
(who sadly has left UK to live in Oz). Adam played in a hardcore Chigaco blues band called BadTown Blues.
I've got to say that if I hadn't had lessons from him I'd probably be still at the stage I was stuck at (although Adam Gs lessons weren't available then of course).
I would thoroughly recommend having lessons if you can get a good teacher. You can't beat the instant feedback and all of the experience they will impart to you. Not just on playing but how to behave at a jam, what mic to use, what amps sound good, how to set up your rig...all that good stuff. Just to talk to another harp player is great as I'm sure Belfast was the same as Dagenham..not exactly falling over yourself with harp players.

Adam Gs lessons are great and I've learnt alot from them too but it was those one to one Lessons I got a few years back that really got me playing properly and got rid of all the bad habits I taught myself.

Give Russ a ring though as I'm sure he can give you some good advice too.

As always this is just my opinion and you might find that another approach works better for you.Whatever you decide to do, good luck with it and enjoy yourself.

hey- ronnie did his usual monday tutorial post on youtube. (a day late this week.)

he is giving a trial offer on his Skype lessons- 15 minutes for $20. or is it 20 minutes for $15? anyway, it is a good way to see if you can use his lessons.

Hi BH

dublin-belfast isn't that far, theres a guy down here in Dublin who gives group & private lessons, not sure about the cost but it might be worthwhile booking a couple of hours and making a day of it. have a look at the waltons school of music website.
as good as the tutorials are sometimes you just need someone to point out the little things that hold us back...

Skype is a very good way to do online lessons. There may be local harp players that give lessons but I wouldn't put a lot of stock in most of them if you truly want to progress.

I know Dennis Gruenling gives skype lessons and Jason Ricci has been know to give a few when he's off the road. I do lessons via skype as well look me up chris.michalek

Why go local when for a little more $ you can get world class lessons from a world class player?

btw- my skype lessons are $50 per half hour or $90/hr+

I guarantee your playing will be changed in one lesson. Those that have worked with me at SPAH or Rockin in the Rockies know about my unique teaching style and how effective it is.
