Ok, bit cheeky but here is a request for tomorrows riff! Can anyone play the little harp bit in the theme tune to the first series of The Wire?!

"If you walk through the garden," DUH-DUH-DURRRRRR-DUH "... you better watch your back."

This is a kind of a riff, I guess:

1) Get Adam's lesson on train songs and get the rhythm pattern he teaches down.

2) When you are going along, doing the 'tuka tukas'--start a pattern with 'BUCKa tuka'

bucka tuka tuka tuka bucka tuka tuka tuka
bucka tuka tuka tuka bucka tuka tuka tuka
bucka tuka bucka tuka bucka tuka tuka tuka

Then repeat until you drop. Do train whistle just before you keel over.

This is big fun--the 'bucks' add another rhythm dimension--not unlike Sonny Terry's hand slaps.

I got the Bucka from Ron Shellist--and the tucka from Adam. . .

Sometimes I do this short riff before I start a solo.

4overblow, 5overblow, 6 draw sustained
duh duh wooooooooooow

First two notes are just quick hits setting you up for the wail. Scoop into the 6 draw from the 6 draw bend, and then let a little bit of 7 draw in, much like you do with the 4 and 5 draw, and man that note will scream.

A little riff that takes you from 6 blow down to 2 draw with some fiddly bits on the way. The 4 blows are only sounded momentarily.

6 -5 -4 4 -3 -4 4 -3 -4 4 -3 -2 2 -1 -1 2 -2

Little Walter's Juke - first 8 bars
You'll have to listen to Adam's lesson to get it right.

2 3 4 5 6 6
d d d b b b

I can't do it at Full Speed...

here's a fun lil riff that I use:
3 draw bent to 3 draw w/ a lil 4 draw, to 4 blow, to 4 draw bent then unbent, to 4 - 5 draw warble, to 4 draw bent, than gliss to 2 draw, then 2 draw w/ vibrato. Sorry if that's not thorough. I'm not the best at explaining riffs.

Lee Oskar does a riff in his song BLT where he rapidly repeats with a [F] harmonica in a glissando that is amazing.

9b,8d,9d (I think).

The speed and duration of Lee's performance has been very difficult for me to match.

I found it just after the 2 minute mark on this youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgDDEG6CxDw

In his more recent recordings, he does this with greater intensity then found on this youtube.

Lee also does this in
Lee's Blues soon after the 2min50sec mark.
Best of Lee Oskar Vol 2 Album.

This is the one I had in mind originally.

The 'Wire' fill that I mentioned earlier is just -2bend, -2, -3, -2 I think, but I can't make it sound anything like how it should do.

Here is a little riff I like to play. Scoop the 4 draws to make it sound better, and hold the 5 draw:

-4, -5, -4, 4, -2, -3, 4, -2.

I have several more, however, like Adam said in another post, it is difficult to post a riff without notation or an audio example. Sometimes a certain riff only sounds good when you phrase it a certain way, and that phrasing is lost in typing. I think that maybe why most people hesitate to post.

Anyway, here's another one. This should only take up 4 beats (one bar), so Ya Gotta play pretty fast to get all this in. A little Jason Ricci style.

-1 -2' -2
-2' -2 -3' -2
-2' -1
-2' -2 -2' -2 -3'

Here's another one. Adam did a YT video awhile back and I believe it was copying a sax player. Not sure the name or number anymore, but the riff went something like this:

+5 -4 -3' +2 -2

Anyway, I took that riff and transposed it to the high end of the harp and slowed it way down. Gives a very bluesy, melancholy feel.

+8 -8 +^6(overblow) +5 +6

I actually start on the 8 blow bend, and slowly scoop into the unbent note. I can also slightly bend the pitch up and down on my overblows, so I scoop a little bit on the 6 overblow too.

Maybe we should do like the other thread says and start posting the riff of the day.

Walk this way by Aerosmith:
Key of E second position on A harp

+4 -4' -4 +6
+4 -4' -4 +6 -2
+4 -4' -4 +6
+4 -4' -4 +6 -2 -2 +6

The problem with this is the 6 blow is very stable, and Joe Perry plays that top E note with a little bluesy scoop. I am trying to learn this in third position on a D harp, so I will be hitting the very bendable 4 draw as the E note. However, it requires the 3draw step and half followed by 3 draw full step bend, and it is really hard to get the intonation right.

Key of E 3rd position D harp

-2 -3"' -3" -4
-2 -3"' -3" -4 -1
etc.

Thanks Preston: I'm new to the forum: Wish I could claim this riff. I was givin that from Jimi Lee.. K.C. is initials/nickname. The Sunshine Band did'nt sober up with me. Its now a solo gig. Only been playing the harmonica for a year and a half, but been working my butt off, with the help of some great instructors. The Plaintiff told me I needed a hobby, did'nt know it would turn into an Obsession!!

Was working on two things:

1. Buddah's deal about not ever playing the root note
2. Listening to alot of guitar players riffs.

One thing I notice is that the guitar guys tend to do alot of octave jumps in their playing. Keeping these two things in mind, I stumbled across a riff I thought I'd share. Maybe do a YT vid of it someday on the harpfriends channel.

2nd position:

-3' +4 -2" -5~~~~ wail on the 5 a bit to make it interesting.
