Just curious... I'm the Tempe area and wondering about the possibility of building a local chapter of the "dirty south blues harp" family... Would be great to have some face to face interaction with other blues harp learnin' fools!

Wow, Chris, you live here? I did not know that we had a bona fide harp guru living here in the PHX area! I was under the impression that PHX was kind of a "black hole" for harmonica, and very low on the totem pole of "blues" cities in general. We certainly don't get a huge number of acts passing through, and we only have one real blues venue (the Rythym Room)... Do you ever play out around town? I'd love to catch you at a local gig...
Anyway, I'm sure a pro like Chris isn't all that interested in hanging out too much with begining/intermediate players, but if any other PHX area folks reply and are interested, I'd be more than willing to organize some kind of informal meetup! It would be very cool to be able to build a small local community that want's to talk harp and perhaps to go with to see those acts that do come through (I think Kim Wilson is coming through some time soon)

I play mostly private parties at the Biltmore, Princess Resport or Maggianos in scottsdale. The scottsdale mayor was/is a harmonica student so we end up with a bunch of private gigs for the city.

I used to play 4-6 days per week but then things started getting. I used to play at Caffe Boa once per week but then he starting paying his bands $250/nt regardless of the number of performers. When we played there we made $600 for the trio so we stopped playing there. I used a weekend house gig at Mobsters, Inc too but then one day I showed up and they were out of business. There just isn't anywhere to play for decent money. Then there is issue of my drummer touring with Jason Ricci. He sounds great with them, I just wish we had the work around here.

I usually don't go out unless I'm training dogs or there is a music friend playing in town. If you happen get more area players around, I'd stop out. You can always come watch us work dogs and hang out then. I'm always happy to talk harp when I'm not doing something else.

Yeah, the scene around here was never fantastic, but has started to be downright dismal of late. I remember when I first moved out here 4 years ago that Cafe Boa used to have really great live music, but then that stopped(I'm talking about the one off of Mill Ave in Tempe, not the one in Awhatukee. I assume that's the one you were talking about too). I used to be able to catch really good local and pan-SW acts at The Last Exit on Southern and Priest, ut of late that's been sucking. Also for a while the Yucca Tap Room on Southern at Mill was good too, but not so much anymore. I also remember that the New Times used to put on a really cool one of those one-day, multi-venue, buy-a-wrist-band-get-a-schedule-see-as-many-local-bands-as-possible festival, but they haven't done that for like three years... Lately Hollywood Alley on Baseline just east of the 101 has had a couple of good local newgrass and alt-country type bands play there (including one of my friend's band), and that was pretty good, but of late there's really not been much... Keep us posted here if you do have a local show, I'll definately show up!

Just bumping this up to the top of the list. Anyone else out there from Phoenix and interested in a face to face meetup group?
