Hey everybody!

As I said in my vid, I belive that the youtube channel "harpfriends" has great potential.

The problem is, that the channels in youtube aren't exactly made to be used in this way. I shortly thought about organizing the harpfriends in a group instead of a channel. But somehow I prefer the channel. It somehow "groups" it better. :-)

So we need some ways to make the channel manageable /"overviewable" (is that a word?) also, if someday, there may be hundreds of videos posted. So we need ways to organise the channel (I hope that doesn't sound too much like the "old Europe").

There were a couple of attempts already made:
-For instance having a title that means something maybe including your name, etc.
-And having the videos public, so that you don't have to switch username each time you want to check out the vids.
-There were also some ideas of having playlists..

etc.

It would be nice if we could work out some kind of guidelines on how we use the channel (especially as we all somehow have administrative powers...).

Cheers everybody,

To start off, I had an idea (which actually made me start this thread).

The problem is, that you don't get a message when somebody posts a comment on your video (imagine somebody posts a comment on a video you posted a year ago...).

So I recommend: When somebody posts a video, he posts a comment with his personal youtube name, like: "Post comments here.". So, if you want to comment the harping (and you want that person to read that comment) you just reply to that comment (so the person will be notified by his youtube channel).

I hope you understand what I mean.

Tell me what you think about that.

I thought a bit about how playlists could be used to organize the videos:

For instance there could be a "tutoring" playlists. You could post your videos there if all you want is that people tell you brutally honest in which ways your playing is bad (and of course how you could do it better). The criticism could then be posted as a video response in the "harping tricks and tips" playlist. :-)

What about a "harp music theory" playlist. Where you could post videos explaining. 1st, 2nd, 3rd position etc. the differen modes, the different scales. The circle of fifths adapted to the harp...

I would also like a "harp styles" playlist. Where you could explain, for instance, how to sound like a trumpet :-). Or how to imitate styles of other players (their little tricks, ...)

Then there could be a "harp customizing" playlist. I say this because I just read a thread where somebody asked about tips on how to customize harps. I actually want to get started on that too (waiting on my Lee Oskar tool set) and I've been researching on how to for quite a while now. What I missed was that, while quite some people that told you what they did, there is actually very little footage of people actually working on the harp while explaining... (except of reedbuster, I think he's called. however it is in italian... :-( )

Then of course there could be a "riff of the day" playlist, a "melodies that stick your mind", "rock the shit out of the harp", "Adam Gussow lessons"...

Maybe we could have another thread to collect ideas for that...

German Harpist,

I think you have some very good ideas, and I think for it to really work at a higher level ( although it is cool in its random form anyway ) it needs someone who has a bit of time to think it through and take charge, and let people know what to do. I would encourage you to do this if you want to and have the time. I think Chris wasnt interested in moderating it, but maybe check with Miles as he kicked this whole thing off and its his baby.

You're right Tryharp,i am affraid i don't have time to administrate it.But maybe it doesn't have to be that hard to make it run by itsel. German harpist could simply make the playlists he mentionned for a start ,we would just have to put our vids in the right playlist or create a playlist if we feel we need an extra one .We could be in charge of the vids we upload so we won't have to administrate the others ( i have two vids just now so i take care of them and put them in a playlist). It can be fun if everybody feels that they are in charge. It might be anarchy at the beginning, but if we explain how it works when we send invites it should work.

I'm not about to administer this thing either--but it should stay pretty simple--there are those around here, like me, who don't like to think too much about stuff. . .

Hi again ,just got an idea i created a mail adress that i'll be setting in the harpfriend channel.

Harpfriends@gmail.com
Password is the same as the youtube channel.

So now you can get mail notifications when vids get comments .
Hope this will help,
Chris

What i was thinking about was a starting vid, with no harp playing on it. A detailed description would be used, maybe a black screen with scrolling words. (the title would be what video responses are to be used) and video responses would be used to make a "strand" of specific harp bits (sing and play, funk, full blues, riffs)

and make all vids public. once we get a whole lot of people, it will be hard to post and view if we have to logon to harpfriends. But if we use video responses, i dont think we'll have to logon to harpfriends.... Thamk you all for your support. We have a lot of people in. 10 videos already!

Hi everybody

I wouldn't mind doing some administring. At the end I don't believe that it will be too much work:

Basically it is about structuring the channel from the beginning onwards, so that it will be sorted and usable - also for people that come to the harpfrinds later on (in a year when there will be many, many videos... :-). By then it could be a video database for harp enthusiasts of all levels.

There are two basic things that should be worked out:

1. The Playlists:
The playlists should be well chosen to cover all the interests of the harpfriends equally, without being too specific - i.e. when there are more than 15-20 playlists, that starts getting chaotic.

2. Good title/description format:
Choosing a good format is about how the video is presented, so that it is easily recognizable and usable, again - also in a year or two. This means, choosing a good title (not too general, including the name). Having a good description, maybe including a link to the personal youtube channel. Having a uniform notation-system to write down the tabs... (its not a must, but i think it would be much better). Etc. ...

At the end it is more about finding/discussing a good way to organize the harpfriends channel and than paying attention that it is done. I propose continuing the discussing on the ModernBluesHarmonica forum, so that everybody can chip in.

Now I go to bed. However, tomorrow I will start by putting up some playlists and threads.

Cheers

Ok, before going to bed:

@chris aka cm16600
Thank you for creating the gmail account. It will definitely be of use. However it will get a notification sent for every comment posted. That will be a lot and you have the same on the harpfriends channel. Plus you have to login. Although it is a little cumbersome I would recommend to use the method as I explained in the previous post. At least for the people that want to be notified directly. Or maybe there is a easier way of doing so? I'll think about it.

@Miles Dewar
I didn't really understand the idea you had with the blank screen and the words scrolling along. Could you explain that once again, please.

Cheers everybody. And good Night.
