Hey folks,
I picked up a Turner 22x on the cheap from Ebay a while ago and just finished rebuilding it.
The element is a Shure Controlled Reluctance elemet with a clear plastic shell on the back. It measures out at 1150 ohms!
Since this is my first vintage mic let alone my first mic rebuild I am curious if this thing is supposed to be so loud!
I normally use a cheap no name tape recorder mic and Epiphone Valve Jr wich sounds ok but lacks the big mic sound.
I plug my newly rebuilt Turner 22x in crank the amp about 1/4 or the way an holy SHEIT!!!! This thing is extremely loud. I had to turn it way down to keep it at a resonable level, only because everyone was in the house. Otherwise I would have cranked her up to see how loud it gets, hahahaha.
The question is do I just need a inline volume control/volume pot, do I have the wrong impedence or should I swap out the 12AX7 in the amp for something with a lower gain?
Thanks Tom

With the cheap no name mic, did you plug it directly into the amp or did you have it going through an impedance converter?
Cheap no name mics are usually low impedance, which means that when you plug them into an amplifer(which is a high impedance input), they usually have a pretty low volumn. Your new Turner mic is most likely a high impedance mic. Are you pluging the Turner directly into the amp? If this is tha case, you probably do not need to change anything, your first mics volume was just to low to begin with.
When you plug a low impedance mic into a high impedance amp ( without using an impedance converter) the volume will be low. ---------- Brandon Bailey

Hi Brandon
Yes to plugging both mics directly into the amp no converters used.
The no name mic though lower will crank up plenty but I have to twist vol knob up pretty high.
So it sounds like the Turner is doing what is expected then and I should look into a volume control.
thanks Tom
Impressive playing BTW Brandon I thoroughly enjoyed your videos.

Thanks.
Just turn down the volumn on your amp and you won't have to spend money on a volume control.(Unless you really want to) ---------- Brandon Bailey
